On my recent visit to Tuscany I was fortunate enough to visit the Petra Winery and to be able to taste through their range of wines. While there I made a trio of tasting videos, the second of these being Quercegobbe , the first having been Petra ‘Hebo’ Toscana IGT 2024 and finishing off with their flagship wine Petra. The range was impressive to taste and I am very grateful to the team at the winery for giving up so much time to show me around, explain how they work and allow me to taste through their wines and create these videos. Do follow the link below to watch the tasting video for the Petra ‘Hebo’ Toscana IGT 2024 and be sure to watch the third video, Petra Toscana IGT 2023, to be published later this week.

N.B. towards the end the sound quality dips a little as it appears the noise cancelling dropped out for a few seconds – My apologies for this it briefly makes it difficult to hear.

The Petra Azienda Agricola wine estate is located near Suvereto, in the Maremma region of Tuscany. The estate produces a range of wines classified as Toscana IGT from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese, varieties introduced to this region by Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, Princess of Piombino, an enlightened wine enthusiast, in around 1805. The Petra estate was founded in 1997 by father-daughter team Vittorio and Francesca Moretti.

The 300 hectare (800 acre) property stretches across the hillsides of Val di Cornia. The vineyard has three main soil types – stoney with areas of chalk; alluvial and rich in minerals and metals; and deep and rich in lime. Vine varieties were accordingly planted in the sites that they were thought best suited to.

Petra’s eye-catching, modern, gravity-fed winery is based around a cylindrical structure that houses stainless steel fermentation tanks at the bottom and grape reception at the top. The barrel cellars are arranged on each side in tunnels dug into the hillside.

The portfolio is led by the Petra cuvée, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Quercegobbe is a delicious single varietal Merlot whose quality rivals that of the flagship wine. Hebo, their entry level wine, is an unoaked blend of Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

As well as Petra Azienda Agricola, Vittorio and Francesca Moretti also own other estates in Tuscany, in Franciacorta and on the island of Sardinia.
