For the ugly portrait one…..there's something being left out, whether the OP knows what it is or not. Something is missing and it may very well be the drawing itself. When a critical detail like what that portrait actually looked like is left out, I assume the OP is the asshole. I don't think we have enough information otherwise to make a real call. Getting told your contribution to a memorial is not welcome is a STRONG course of action, so we really need to see it or know what else is being omitted.

The ‘ugly portrait’ one hit close to home today. I lost one of my best friends due to hanging a week and one day ago. We are doing her memorial at our school and we are both in 10th grade. It hit hard and I can’t see in anyway how that person was the asshole in the moment. If anyone wanted to contribute to my friends memorial in any way it would never be a problem. I don’t see how that girls friends told OP that she couldn’t leave her drawing.

For the story of the drawing for the dead girl, I have some thoughts.
We have to consider that the close friends were also grieving, so they were more emotional and sensitive in the moment (it doesn't excuse the rude things they said but still.)
It's possible that they thought OP was only placing a drawing to just "fit in with the trend", and they thought that OP didn't actually care about the deceased girl.
