Some wines stop you in your tracks. This is one of them.
Pertimali is one of the true legends of Brunello di Montalcino. For many people, their wines are the benchmark for what classic Sangiovese can achieve. The first great Brunello moment for more than a few seasoned drinkers came from this estate.
The fruit for this wine comes from Montosoli, one of the most important vineyard sites in all of Montalcino. It is a grand cru level site on the north side of the appellation, prized for its balance, refinement, and ability to produce wines that age beautifully while still offering transparency and elegance.
The 2018 vintage is a beautiful one in Brunello. Fragrant, juicy, and expressive, with immediate charm but plenty of structure underneath. While it may not be a massive blockbuster vintage like 2016 or 2019, it delivers harmony and pleasure at a very high level.
This is old school Brunello in the best sense. Native yeast fermentation. Large format aging. No tricks. No flash. Just pure Sangiovese expressing place.
In the glass, the wine is clear and transparent. Aromas of spice cake, cinnamon, ginger, and red fruit lift from the glass. The palate is refined and balanced, with a beautiful sense of symmetry. There is structure here, real bones from Montosoli, but the wine is already incredibly drinkable.
Normally this wine sells for around $90.
We were able to secure a small parcel in Europe and offer it at $49.
There are only about 25 cases available, and this will sell out quickly. The last vintage we ran disappeared almost immediately, and this 2018 is even more endearing and better balanced.
If you love Brunello, if you love classic Italian wine, or if you want one of the great names of Montalcino in your cellar without paying full retail, this is the moment.

How many takes did you do on the opening?
Great review. I bought the ‘16 BdM vintage from this producer. Gonna cellar another 4 or 5 years.
I'm lucky to own a few cases of 2016 from this producer. Already finished the first case, it's soo good!
