As an italian, ive never even heard of the history of that window-
"Said to be more medicinal and less contaminated than the water" – actually WAS. Alcohol sterilised the water, that's why everyone drank beer/wine. In Asia they coveryed soups, which is why there is a greater prevalence of alcohol intolerance there
