In my most recent video I had difficulty finding the delicate rose-petal perfumes I look for in mature Barolos in this wine. 2014 was an undeniably tricky vintage and notes i had seen told me Poderi Aldo Conterno had used longer macerations in 2014, reducing the wine’s perfume for the sake of a fine, dense tannic structure – I had hoped revisiting the wine the next day might have allowed a little more perfume to show, but this was not really the case. The wine’s suggested drinking window is from 2020 to 2035 – so if you want to lave the wine for longer to see if it will gain more perfumed aromas there is certainly no hurry to it drink up.
