Inspired by Southern Italian cooking, this soup uses olive oil, cabbage, chickpeas, tomatoes, and broth to create a nourishing meal that’s easy on digestion and naturally anti-inflammatory. The rich tomato base, made with a full can of tomato paste, adds depth and flavor without heaviness — just the way it’s been done in Italian kitchens for generations.
Canned tomatoes are just as healthy as fresh and are rich in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant linked to reduced inflammation and heart health. Cooking them in olive oil helps the body absorb those nutrients more effectively. Chickpeas add fiber and plant-based protein, cabbage supports gut health, and a splash of lemon at the end brightens the soup while supporting digestion and mineral absorption.
This is not a restrictive or trend-based recipe. It’s a warm, practical soup you can return to again and again — perfect for anyone looking to reduce inflammation naturally while enjoying real, satisfying food.
🥣 Ingredients:
Olive oil, 1 onion, 4 cloves garlic, 1 can tomato paste, 1 can diced tomatoes, 1/2 head of cabbage, 1 can chickpeas, 1 tsp oregano, 1 tsp paprika, 4-6 cups chicken or vegetable broth, lemon juice, salt and pepper.

We just made a homemade chicken 🐔 soup. And the chicken was delicious! Such comfort you can’t describe. It’s the noodles. 🍜 we got them at a Polish market. There are lighter noodles as I find out Italian ones just absorb the broth too much. Nonetheless Lisa your on point soup 🍲 is definitely called for. Ontario has been cold and snowing! 🌨️ Brrrrr ❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️
I love soups like this. I could eat things like this at least 5 times a week. Seriously. I will make a note to make this soon. I already have everything except the cabbage 👍
I will be trying tthis!
Thank you Lisa for yet another great recipe..

Perfect for freezing snowy Toronto..

This looks delicious. Love how you build up the base of the soup before adding the broth. I think it really develops the flavor (but i often forget to do it😅) Thank you, Lisa!

I heated my crockpot sauted my oinions and garlic in olive oil right in the crockpot, added bag cabbage I needed to use along with leftover broth then added the tomatoes products and seasoning.
Turn it on an may be occasioal stiring.
I'm definitely making this soup! Grazie!

Sounds so good, think I have everything to make it, maybe tomorrow. Thank you for sharing it!
My husband is one week from a robotic hip replacement. He's pretty uncomfortable and cannot take any pain meds. I plan to cook this tomorrow and hopefully, even if it's just delish, it will bring some relief. Inflammation can definitely be increased with the wrong diet. Thank you, Lisa.
Yum
Thanks! This will certainly help inflammation.
Looks so good. What is the name of your knives you use. It looks interesting.
Can I substitute red cabbages instead of green and can I use ground turkey instead of the chick peas?
Nope I can’t do paprika and chickpeas so will need to try something else. 😢
❤❤❤❤
This looks delish. I suffer from inflammation. Making this soup this week.
