The Mediterranean is supposed to be Europe’s calm backyard — tourism, trade, and politics at a slow boil.
But beneath the surface, something far more serious has been unfolding. Italy has been quietly transforming its military across land, sea, air, cyber, and space — not through dramatic announcements, but through steady, coordinated expansion. While attention focused on Eastern Europe and the Baltic, Italy was rebuilding in plain sight.

This video breaks down why Italy’s military transformation matters, what’s driving it, and why the Mediterranean is becoming one of Europe’s most strategically important theaters.

In this video, we cover:
• Why Italy’s defense spending surge went largely unnoticed
• How Mediterranean instability is reshaping Italy’s security priorities
• Italy’s growing role as NATO’s southern anchor
• The impact of North Africa, energy routes, and migration on military planning
• Italy’s expanding naval, air, cyber, space, and amphibious capabilities
• Why this transformation is long-term, deliberate, and structural — not reactive

This analysis is based on publicly available reporting, official documents, and independent assessments. It discusses trends and strategic shifts, not predictions of future conflict.

  1. 5% of GDP on arms?? it will never happen, or a civil uproar will surge. Guess 2% is going to be more than enough.

  2. Our country made an intelligent strategic choice in 1914: Austria-Hungary is threatening an offensive war, not a defensive action, they were assaulted by a terrorist, not a state. And this was not worth going to war over. Unfortunately, most of Europe did not agree with us. And after almost a year, our country was dragged, stupidly, into an insane war. This was achieved by foreign powers promising us overmuch, and Roman politicians believing foreign liars.
Ultimately, in 2026, we must keep our wits about us, keep our powder dry and our military in good shape, and work to keep the EU strong and independent.

  3. We didn't buy leopard A8, but the more capable KF51 Panther ( 300, in multiple versions) and 1000 KF 41 lynx. They both will be produced in Italy, in a partnership Leonardo/Rheinmetal

  4. No surprise they’re keeping it as quiet as possible. Like in most European countries, Italy’s public isn’t particularly fond of the idea of increasing military spending to de detriment of healthcare, education, and social security.

  7. Italian goods worth over 100 billion euros pass through the Suez Canal, exported to the world every year. This is one of the reasons why the Mediterranean must be protected by the Italian Navy.

Then we need to protect the energy infrastructure and the telecommunications networks connecting Southeast Asia to Italy and Europe. An Italian company called Sparkle owns all the undersea cables carrying communications between these continents. There are dozens of other reasons why Italy must defend its interests, whether from other hostile nations, pirates, or terrorist organizations!

  8. One Good point in italian defence forces Is they are efficent: Italy's conventional Army can be compared in strenght tò the UK's one but it's much cheaper….
