A UNESCO panel has already issued a favourable preliminary review, and the country now awaits a final ruling on December 10.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has publicly backed the effort, calling Italian cuisine a symbol of culture, tradition and national strength. If awarded, Italy will join countries like Japan, Korea, Mexico and France whose traditional foodways have already been recognised globally. From the vineyards of Tuscany to Sicilian cannoli, Italy hopes this heritage tag will protect authenticity in an era of global fast food.
