Italy has made history by becoming the first country ever to receive UNESCO recognition for its entire national cuisine. The United Nations cultural body announced on Wednesday that Italian cooking will be inscribed on the coveted intangible cultural heritage list, honoring everything from pasta and mozzarella to wine and tiramisu.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government campaigned aggressively for this recognition, submitting the bid just five months after coming to power in October 2022.
This unprecedented achievement sets Italy apart from other nations, as previous UNESCO food recognitions honored only single dishes or traditions, not an entire country’s culinary heritage. The Italian leader celebrated the announcement within minutes, posting on Instagram that the recognition honors Italian identity and emphasizes that cuisine represents culture, tradition, and national wealth beyond just food.
UNESCO praised Italian cuisine as a cultural and social blend that brings families and communities together, highlighting how traditional recipes are passed down through generations. Italy now has 22 traditions on the prestigious list, including Neapolitan pizza making and opera singing.
