Italy is raising a glass and saying “salute” after becoming the first country in history to have an entire cuisine added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.

Rather than a single recipe or tradition, the United Nations body voted to add Italian cuisine as a whole to the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage on Wednesday.

  2. actually the Unesco recognition for Italian cooking intangible heritage of humanity is mainly a tool to fight counterfeiting of Italian food and cooking mostly in America and a few other non European countries.

Make people conscious they are eating fake cheeses, counterfeited food, and getting deceived.

The US is known to be one of the biggest counterfeiting market, as China counterfeits Italian fashion the US counterfeits Italian food, with all the dangers attached to this.

  3. The problem is that you Americans don't know enough about Italian cuisine. You reduce it to the usual fare like pasta and pizza, but it's much more vast and varied than you might imagine. There are fish, meat, vegetable, and legume dishes, not to mention the variety of cheeses, cured meats, desserts, drinks, and much more, different in each region. Its influence extends to other countries around the world, the United States being a prime example. So is there a reason it became a UNESCO World Heritage!

  4. No, Italian cuisine is not the 1st. Mexican cuisine was designated an intangible world heritage by UNESCO in 2010. Don't reporters actually research anymore?

  5. Little Italy in America does not represent Italy. They are Americans of Italian ancestry who don't speak the language and the cuisine has been washed out using ingredients that has nothing to do with the original recipes. In fact when Americans visit Italy the are shocked at the difference in taste. This is what Italians fought for and got the recognition. To keep their produce only "made in Italy" and their food authentic as possible without all the imitations around

  6. Italian restaurants in America have nothing to do with the restaurants in Italy, so please don’t spoil our cuisine. Grazie

  7. Intangible? Food is definitely tangible! I touch it with my utensils or by hand, and it goes into my mouth.
