In the early 1970s, most vaporetti were wooden or early metal-hulled boats, often shorter and narrower than today’s models. They had simpler cabins, sliding or open windows, and fewer safety barriers. Some older 1950s–60s ACTV craft were still in service.
The Grand Canal Line (Line 1 today) was already the central route, connecting Piazzale Roma to the Lido.
