Research from Harvard Medical School and Cornell University confirms what I see every day: spending on experiences, not material things, brings the most lasting happiness. Experiential purchases like travel, dining out, concerts, or shared activities become meaningful memories, strengthen social connections, and become part of your identity. Unlike a new couch or gadget, which fades into the background after a few months, a trip to Italy with your spouse or kids turns into a story you will tell for the rest of your life and hopefully they will tell too.

The happiest retirees understand this principle. They often spend more in their 60s than in their 70s or 80s, not because they are running out of money, but because energy and physical capabilities naturally decline over time. Waiting too long can mean missing the chance to truly enjoy experiences while you are active and engaged.

If there is a trip you have been dreaming of or an experience you have always wanted to try, do not postpone it. Take advantage of the years when you have the energy, freedom, and ability to create memories that will last a lifetime. Your kids are likely in their prime earning years and do not need your financial support as much anymore. This is your time to invest in yourself, your joy, and your story.
