We’re living in the dark ages now. The dark ages was a term coined by Italian poet Petrarch & is basically a lie, many huge feats of engineering were constructed during early medieval period. Blame the Roman church for any darkness that was deliberately brought upon people….just like now.
I question the legitimacy of it because you only mentioned Castles.

That moat would have been a cesspool of diseases not to mention the foul smell especially in summer. The medieval times were horrible so glad I wasn’t there.
