there's no reason. In the textbooks for every cooking school on the planet there is no distinction between a sauce and a gravy. Something is named sauce or gravy, and it stuck. Tomato sauce that's like a gravy is better than the watery Pomodoro sauce, so many of us use for the nice thicker gravy, as opposed to the fresh Pomodoro sauce. But the real difference comes from the fact that the British say gravy, and the French say sauce, and that's where the fight comes in. The French are high minded and sauce sounds sophisticated compared to the terrible food of the British, who used the term gravy.
