2012 Campopian Marziale Amarone

When it comes to classic reds made in Italy, there isn’t much arguing the fact that Amarone is one of the best and sought after styles. These full-bodied red wines are unique in a few different ways, but there is no question that they are one of the fullest styles of wine out there.

After picking Amarone grapes, they go through a process called “apassimento”. The bunches of grapes are laid out on straw mats in the heat. This process allows the concentration of the juice to be much richer. The sugar levels in the juice is much higher which is why many Amarones are extremely full bodied and have a higher alcohol level than most other Italian reds. This process can take up to 120 days.

After all is said and done, the wine is extremely full bodied and is why many are released later than other red wines. They really need some time in barrel and bottle to settle in before they are drinkable. If you taste the wine now, you will get a ton of very dark fruits. Bruised plum, black cherries, and currants all paired with intense vanilla and spice from the oak.

You will want to decant this right away after opening and really get some air into the wine. Drink it now with some heavy foods, or enjoy over the next 10-15 years, maybe even longer!
