Discover the latest big news from Italy and kitchens worldwide! Italian cuisine is on the brink of being designated as part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This significant step forward is the result of Italy’s “Italian Cuisine Between Sustainability and Biocultural Diversity” project, endorsed by the Ministry of Culture and Agriculture.
UNESCO’s positive technical evaluation acknowledges the cultural, social, and emotional significance of Italian cooking, recognizing not just the recipes but also the rituals, gestures, and sense of community that accompany each meal.
The final decision rests on a political vote scheduled for December in New Delhi during the Intergovernmental Committee meeting. Italy’s kitchen could become a UNESCO-recognized cultural treasure, alongside other contenders like Swiss yodeling, Cuban son music, Japanese origami, and Mexico’s Passion of Christ.
If successful, Italy would be the first country with its entire national cuisine honored, showcasing the rich tapestry of identity, diversity, and joy shared through Italian food traditions from north to south.
