Today I taste what is really a quite exceptional example of Franciacorta, Italy’s premium bottle fermented style of sparkling wine. The wine is Ricci Curbastro’s 2005 Extra Brut Museum Release, a wine that has spent ten years ageing on its lees and then subsequently nine years ageing in bottle. While a fading fizz suggests the wine is possibly slightly past its best, the combination of yeast ageing and subsequent bottle development leaves a very complex wine overlaying its fine and very soft mousse.

Ricci Curbastro were one of the 11 companies originally making sparkling wine in the Franciacorta region when it achieved its DOC status in 1967. Eighteen generations of the family have grown grapes in this part of Lombardy since the 14th Century. Today the company is overseen by Ricardo Ricci Curbastro. As well as sparkling wines the company also makes a range of still wines under the Sabino IGT.
