While in Dubai on a stop-over on my flight back to New Zealand after my recent trip to England I spotted a bottle of 2021 Luce, available to try, so today’s tasting is recorded in Emirates Business Class Lounge in Dubai Airport. Apologies for the fact that as I finish the tasting my phone ran out of memory and stopped recording – fortunately I had finished videoing my impressions of the tasting, so was able to record the end of the video subsequently and splice it on.
Tenuta Luce is a wine estate based in the Montalcino region of southern central Tuscany. Originally known as Luce della Vite, Tenuta the estate was founded in the early 1990s as a collaboration between Robert Mondavi and Marchesi de Frescobaldi. Ownership of the venture passed entirely to Lamberto Frescobaldi in 2002.
Despite lying within the zone for Brunello di Montalcino, the estate is best known for this wine – a combination of Sangiovese and Merlot – that, on its debut in 1993, became one of the very first Super Tuscans to come from the region.
The estate sits to the southwest of the town of Montalcino where they have 77 hectares of vines. The Sangiovese grows on higher, better-drained soils, while the Merlot is planted on heavier soils with more clay and sand. The parcels of the two varieties are vinified separately and then blended prior to ageing. A second wine called Lucente is sourced from the same vineyards.
Tenuta Luce also makes a Brunello di Montalcino label, which has received many favourable reviews from critics – this wine comes from a five-hectare portion of the estate, that is registered for the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG.
