As an Italian: i guess at first the noble didn’t eat tomatoes either, because as a kid i studied that in all Europe it was firmly believed that they were poisonus, but probably the ones who were poor tried them out of desperation, discovered that they were not only not poisonus, but also very good, and started using it to make sauces or similar. Just like it was for potatoes.
