These walls help to maintain balance in an incredibly fragile landscape and are absolutely critical to the longevity of the Cinque Terre. They provide strength and structural integrity to a steep, mountainous terrain that would just as well release itself into the sea below.
Simply put:
Without the wine growers, there would be no one to monitor or repair the walls.
Without the walls, there would be no Cinque Terre.
