Rynwood wasn’t just another Gold Coast mansion, it was a storybook Tudor estate on Long Island, 40,000 square feet of Cotswold‑inspired stone, timber, and leaded glass built in 1927 for rayon pioneer Sir Samuel Salvage. Nearly lost in the 1970s, the house was rescued and reborn as Villa Banfi, the U.S. headquarters of Banfi Vintners.

BTW, the financial resources that built these house continue to flow to the elite Families, they are just a great deal more conservative in their display of wealth. (There are a few exceptions, but they aren't Old Money).

I was very fortunate to be the Villa Banfi chef for all the events, fine dining wine tasting lunches and dinners from the grand opening till 1990. An amazing place on so many levels. The kitchen was amazing and well outfitted with everything commercial grade. We would fly VIPs in on helicopter and land by the vineyard and serve 7-11 course meals paired with their finest wines. Interestingly, I grew up 1 mile down the road and my father was the top local veterinarian. While Mr Lundy owned it, he rarely stayed there but he had several huge dogs that he would let run rampant though the whole house, causing significant damage. My father would get a call from Mr. Lundy at late hours to treat the dogs for something and we would know he went there because there woud be several cherry and apple pies ton the kitchen table in the AM that Mr Lundy brought from his iconic restaurant which we dined at for special occasions. RYNWOOD was magical.

Fascinating, especially regarding rayon manufacture coming before the second war. Searched for the Marcus Hook Rayon Village, Pa. Correction rayon came from Courtaulds in the UK, I thought so, textiles in the 70's. Sorry to see on Google Earth- a scar left in the Philadelphia landscape today. Much appreciated, thanks Ken
