Something went VERY wrong with this tasting. Two of our three recordings mysteriously “corrupted” leaving Henry (me) to face 6 Italian wines completely alone. Coincidence? Or did Brendan and Noah see the comments about my “improvement” and decide to take action? 🤔

In this disaster of a blind tasting, I’m flying solo through:

2 brackets of 3 wines each
Tuscany vs Piedmont vs Sicily in each bracket
Wines ranging from $38 to $215

Watch me struggle through Italian varieties without my safety net, make wild guesses about Nebbiolo based on “toy brick colors,” and somehow survive to tell the tale. The boys mysteriously reappear for the reveal (how convenient).

Did I maintain my “most improved taster” reputation? Did the sabotage work? You’ll have to watch to find out.

My completely solo predictions included:

Calling everything Nebbiolo
Actually nailing the Nero d’Avola (broken clock, twice a day)

Technical difficulties or deliberate sabotage – you decide. Either way, North Italy takes the crown with that stunning Barbaresco.

  1. As always, so entertaining and educational, great stuff. Funny, I just received six bottles of Barbaresco, from Cascina delle Rose and both their MGA sites Tre Stelle and Rio Sordo, both 2021! Can't wait to try the Tre Stelle. And yes, Henry is getting better and better at blind tasting 🙂 Keepe it up guys, you're leading the way of wine in Youtube land.

  2. $159AUD for the Terre Nere is eye watering when that wine is 45 EUR in Germany.

This year we drunk Terre Nere's Dagala of Bocca d’Orzo which is the tiny vineyard (0.5 Ha) that somehow didn't get covered in molten rock in 1981. It's similar to the Calderara Sottana but more everything. I almost licked the glass, it was that good.
I would say a strong recommend but lord knows what it would land at for you guys.

    Shame about the footage corruption.

  3. A bit over 350 years ago, the glass blowers got good enough that they could make the inside diameter of the neck of the bottle a single consistent size. This allowed for punching out corks of a consistent size to seal the bottles. But the bottles all had a round bottom. So you could get a box, fill it with sand, and sink your bottles into the sand. Problem solved, right? The straw fiasco enables the round bottomed bottle to stand on a shelf or table. This worked until the glass blowers learned to tuck in the bottom of the bottle so the bottle could stand upright by itself. The bottom is called a punt. No idea why. Machine made bottles can have a very slightly concave bottom, but that just seems "cheap" and we don't like that. Personally, I am a big fan of screwcaps. If someone today said that they were making wine bottles and wanted to seal those bottles with a chunk of tree bark, how would we judge their mental state? The Romans did use cork in some way to seal their amphorae, but that was all forgotten for hundreds of years. Next, we should discuss how the wine glass evolved to its contemporary shape, which is perfect.

  4. Henry: "People are blowing smoke up my a** I haven't really made progress."

In the same video also Henry – See's Barbaresco and within 2 seconds: "There is a Tawny hue with a brick rim so I'm immediately thinking Nebbiolo"

Henry sit the F down and take the compliment son 😛

  5. Great ep guys! Your Italian chops are great for a bunch of Aussies 😅. Timing is excellent, I’m off to Sicily on the weekend, Etna here I come….a great appetizer thanks team🎉

  6. Hey Henry, you did well! Just remember Nebbiolo and Sangiovese are mistaken quite often in tastings, and in Chianti Sangiovese is often blended with other grapes (even Cabernet Sauvignon, and some white grapes as well) so a darker color may be the tip off. Also, Nerello Mascalese is often compared to Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir as well
