  1. Excellent video! Agree, 100% with most of your points. I also started mostly buying Napa Valley wines and as my palate developed began finding most of them extremely “jammy” and over ripped! Now, absolutely prefer Bordeaux and old world style wines from Italy & Spain. Another area this viewer is definitely missing on is Chile! Right now, making some of the best wines in the world, hands-down!
Montes Alpha M, Clos Apalta, Don Melchor & VIK to name a few. If you love Bordeaux blends, chile definitely has to be present in your collection!
    Cheers🍷

  2. Great video. I find that I drink a lot more white wine close to when I purchase them and it leads to the collection being predominantly red .

  3. This is literally exactly what I’ve been wanting to have done to my collection. I’ve said so many of the things you mentioned in this video. If you need another candidate let me know.

  4. Thoroughly enjoyed this video and the way you approached the $30k cellar of your subscriber. I liked how you analyzed the wine collection, expertly pointing out the strengths and the gaps, then coming up with three clear takeaways. Utmost respect for your expert analysis, practical advice, and seasoned collector-connoisseur insight!

  5. Neat format! It's fun to see your analysis for specific wine collections from people with corresponding wine preferences!
Your suggestions are definitely pertinent for "Semi-Collectors" such as myself. And by Semi-Collector, I mean that I and simultaneously tasting my way through the wine world while very gradually adding nicer wines among the grapes/styles/regions I have found pleasing to my taste preferences.

  6. 7:15 Ask your friend to drink that bottle of Guigal St. Joseph Lieu-Dit and see if he likes the style. It's a very good representative of Northern Rhone.

  7. Your usual excellent analysis and presentation, John! I will say that my personal experience with white wine is that seldom do I find that aging results in a wine that I prefer to its younger self, though I could perhaps make a very few exceptions for sweet riesling and Champagne. So my thinking about cellar construction has never involved white wine to any significant degree. Just a different approach.

  8. Good concept for a video! Interesting that this collector is averaging about $70 per bottle for Napa. I would have thought it would be more like $100

  9. Two comments I have regarding the analysis:
    – I think to some, myself included, a $70 would certainly be a special occasion wine. This obviously depends in several factors, income is a big one, but I’m sure people feel that even if they had the money no bottle of wine could justify a price tag in the hundreds of dollars.
    – would it not be a waste of money/space etc to acquire wines just for the sake of ‘filing in the gaps’? I have very little sparkling and white wine in my collection as well because if I did I would hardly ever open a bottle. The only counterpoints I can think of would be tasting group contributions, evolving palates, and possibly from an investment perspective.

  10. To me, this is just a collection of wines without much thought. It looks a boutique wine shop. For $30k, I'd have 50% long aging reds, and 50% for current, short, and medium term. My reds would be hardly any CA – just the old Napa and Sonoma names with a long track record. For long aging, I'd be mostly into Bordeaux and, to a lesser extent Burgundy (because of the cost!), Rioja, Brunello, and Barolo. $70 will get you some very good ones, and $125 for the few "special" ones. The 50% for current/short/medium term would be like a trip around the world. So many good an interesting red and white wines are out there, including plenty of smart buys in the $10 – $25 range.

  11. Excellent analysis and definitely a great topic for a new series. I just did a quick analysis of my cellar and saw that 70% is concentrated in Spain and France. I will have to start lowering that percentage. I like to keep my cellar in 200 bottles +-. This allows me to have a reasonable rotation. If you need a volunteer for this series, glad to chip in. 🙂

  12. Always interesting to hear other peoples consumption, this guy drinking 4-6 bottles a week. I’m around 3-5 a week now, but there was a period when I drank 15-16 bottles a week… NOT GOOD 😌
