Rome – the first 24 hours. You can see a lot of Rome in a day, for sure, especially if you’re willing to hoof them miles around the city. But there’s a difference between seeing something and experiencing it. VFC’s first 24 hours in Rome was all about laying the groundwork for what would come next. Map out the area and see the sights that would be further explored later in the trip.

I arrived on the eve of Three Kings Day, so the Christmas in Rome festivities were still pretty much in full effect. That made for a pretty exciting first night as I walked around looking for that first meal. After a few hours of shut-eye, I awoke to a great breakfast at the guest house I stayed in and then went to check on the rental car – make sure it wasn’t towed or ticketed. It wasn’t. I had planned on going back to the room after that to charge my phone, since the battery was on 20%. Instead I headed up the Pincian Hill and that was the first step of nearly ten miles worth of walking that first day.

Before sitting down for a late lunch I had explored the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Piazza Navona and multiple churches. Piazza Venezia, the Roman Forum and the Colosseum. Again, these were not in-depth tours, just laying the groundwork for what would come later – and really just absorbing this beautiful, fantastic Eternal City.

If I haven’t yet mentioned food and wine, you know there was some food and wine involved. Always. Especially in Italy.

For a special treat, a group of Christmas carolers had gathered in the Piazza del Popolo on the evening of Three Kings Day. Such a fantastic way to end my first 24 hours in Rome, listening to the joyful sounds of Christmas just meters from where I was staying. Such a great experience!

Enjoy VFC’s first 24 hours in Rome. For me it was special. And don’t forget:
