This video is Part 2 of our 9-part exploration of Livigno Ski Resort in Italy. In this chapter, we continue our journey from the Cassana Gondola in the northern quarter, driving southwards along Livigno’s main road until we reach the Mottolino Gondola — the gateway to the famous Mottolino Fun Mountain.
Along the way, we pass through the central quarters of Livigno, including Pontiglia and Centro, where the pedestrian zone is lined with boutique shops, cafés, and restaurants. This stretch is the beating heart of the town, where visitors mingle, shop for tax-free goods, and enjoy après-ski terraces.
About Livigno
Nestled in the Italian Alps at an altitude of 1,816 metres, Livigno is one of Europe’s most snow-sure ski destinations. Located close to the Swiss border and within the Lombardy region of Italy, Livigno is famously known as a duty-free zone, giving it a unique shopping appeal alongside its natural beauty. Its long valley stretches over 12 km and is lined with traditional wooden houses, cosy hotels, and vibrant après-ski venues.
Livigno’s Quarters and Neighbourhoods
Livigno is not just one compact ski village — it’s made up of several distinct quarters and neighbourhoods, each with its own atmosphere:
Trepalle – The highest inhabited parish in Europe, located above the main village towards the Passo d’Eira. Known for wide-open spaces and breathtaking views.
Pontiglia – A central area ideal for shopping, dining, and accessing the main pedestrian zone.
San Rocco – Situated near the Carosello 3000 base station, popular with those who like quick ski-in/ski-out access and lively après-ski.
San Giovanni – A more tranquil area with plenty of open space, family-friendly accommodations, and easy access to cross-country trails.
Plan da Sora – A quieter residential zone close to the forest, great for walking trails.
Centro – The heart of Livigno, bustling with cafés, shops, and nightlife.
Cassana – Northern entry point to the ski area, connected by the Cassana Gondola, ideal for avoiding the central crowd during busy ski days.
The Ski Areas
Livigno offers two major ski areas connected by a free ski bus:
Carosello 3000 – Famous for wide, sunlit slopes perfect for cruising, panoramic mountain views, and long, flowing runs that suit all levels of skiers.
Mottolino Fun Mountain – The playful side of Livigno, known for its world-class snowpark, challenging pistes, and freeride areas. A magnet for snowboarders and freestyle skiers.
Winter Activities
In winter, Livigno becomes a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts:
Alpine skiing and snowboarding with over 115 km of pistes.
Cross-country skiing on more than 30 km of groomed trails.
Snowshoeing, fat biking, and ice climbing for adventurers.
Lively après-ski bars and cosy mountain huts serving local dishes like pizzoccheri and sciatt.
