Well, a Monte Cristo sandwich IS a cheese and ham sandwich fried in egg batter like French Toast and sprinkled with powdered sugar. I’m in my 70s and have never actually had one but I remember reading the recipe in a cookbook of my mom’s when I was a child and thought it had to be a mistake…. But apparently they have been around for a while. I guess it would really have to be cooked correctly so as not to be absolutely terrible.
