My grandmother grew those in our garden in Manasquan. Jersey tomatoes, cucumbers, and green beans every year. There is a reason it's called The Garden State.
There also has been a large number of Italians historically in Oakland , CA. I recall hearing from a local Realtor that it was often easy to tell that Italians had owned a house because they installed a second kitchen — in the basement — to process the tomatoes they brought from their gardens.
I mean, when you know the variety and grow them yourself… they're always the best
You need to feed your plants right, but nothing will ever be better than your garden because the store veggies are bred to be tough (and often tasteless) as they travel across the country.
Funny thing is tomatoes are not indigenous to Europe. Europeans never had tomatoes, those were imported from South America. So many things we know are wrong. Noodles or "pasta" as some people call it, didnt originate anywhere near Europe, it was already a thing in China even though the Italians learned pasta-making from Greeks or Arab traders. My favorite food fact is that Taro roots which are very popular in my country Cyprus are only eaten as a staple food in China and in African countries. This Southeast asian root is so popular in these countries because it is very adaptable especially in sub-Saharan climates
If you haven't had homemade gravy from homegrown tomatoes, dipping homemade Italian bread in the pot while it's cooking, you are missing out on one life's greatest joys.
It's the individual that grows the vegetables that loves the soil, the water, the sun, the work, blood, sweat, tears of absolute love of nature. I love it but I'm not able to work the ground anymore. I showed my parents how to turn dead soil into great soil but it won't last if you don't keep adding to it every year. You have to start with building the soil with wood mulch and barn litter. Just pile it up in layers and soak it down and let go through a heat and turn it and add to it.
Same here. Down the shore the whole family would get together and jar. My grandma and aunt and uncle and my other uncle all lived on Wilde Ave. Cape May NJ. The best
