MetroTV, In Italy’s Alpine region of Valle d’Aosta, researchers are testing a unique method to protect local Petit Rouge grapes from extreme sunlight. They use kaolin — a natural mineral powder — as a protective shield, much like sunscreen for humans.
The trial takes place in four vineyards where some vines are sprayed with kaolin and others are left untreated. The goal is to see if kaolin can prevent sunburn damage that dries out grapes and reduces wine quality.
