The global wine industry has a problem. Consumption is falling in traditional markets and younger generations are losing interest. But in one country, the exact opposite is happening.

Thailand has become the world’s fastest-growing market for wine, and this boom isn’t driven by tourists. It’s driven by the Thai people. We dive into the data and the culture to understand why Thais are embracing wine while the rest of the world seems to be backing away, and what this powerful consumer shift means for the future of a struggling industry.

  1. Really unique perspective!
Will have to check it out. I wonder if it's true in Malaysia as well. I saw a lot more bars focusing on wine in KL last time I was there, compared to 6 or 7 years ago.

  2. Love this video. Well shot and great story. You totally should do this type more often on your podcast.

  3. Good job Brendan , I don’t normally comment but that was some informative info on a scene that I’m unaware of.
Definitely pricked my interest on checking out the Thai scene .
    Cheers

  4. Interesting – when we were in Thailand in '22 good wine was hard to find and quite expensive. By contrast, likely due to the colonial French past, we found better wine more prevalent and less expensive in Cambodia.

  5. Great video, super interesting and well done. My question is has wine culture expanded beyond Bangkok? I’m in Thailand in December but not much time in Bangkok more in Chiang Mai and a bit in the south. Would love to experience great wine in CM.

  6. Hong Kong and China's market are too wine snob/label drinker/boomer and capital driven so they gotta wait for the boomer to die before it will start growing.

I'm based in Toronto and in my city, when restaurant charges 3 times of the market price of wine, it will naturally stop people from trying to get into wine. No one wants to spend $100 USD for a bottle of the most basic Bourgogne Rouge at a restaurant

  7. Great content and interesting insights. šŸ‘ Beautiful country and culture. Perfect compliment to quality wine enjoyment.

  8. Terrific video! Really like this format, too!

I can totally relate to Thailand's restaurateurs and sommeliers, albeit on a private (not commercial) level, with regards to non-conventional pairings and enjoying wines that work with the unique cuisine my dining companion and I create at home. Since our cuisine is Evolutionary Korean (spectrum across traditional, contemporary, to really off-beat with global influences ranging from small to major in each dish), our pairings are going to be based upon what we enjoy because there really isn't a convention for wines other than Korean Barbecue with Big Reds (which we definitely enjoy, too).

  9. I hope this can unlock strong pairings with wine and Thai food! I see too many places act like we can only have white wine with spicy Thai food, but I can see a great Syrah or Grenache go well with it!

  10. brendan man – killing it as always. between informative videos like this and the high volume of blind tastings y’all are putting out, you gents got the recipe figured out. big fan and stoked for more.

  11. Thanks for an interesting video.
I have been to Thailand many times but i had no idea about this recent boom in wine
