Do you think it’s rude or just Italian? Let me know👇💬

– Punctuality: now, imagine you agree to meet at 8 pm for dinner but the people you’ve invited are not there yet. You might feel irritated and wonder “where are they?”. Are they rude or just Italians? Well, a bit of both. Although Italians are well-known for their tendency to arrive late and maybe some people won’t mind waiting, when it comes to work meetings and doctor’s appointments, this is definitely not acceptable. However, when it’s about meeting friends, you usually turn a blind eye.

– The bill/check- il conto: very often tourists complain about the check that doesn’t arrive and might have to wait for a long time to receive it. Well, that’s because Italians don’t rush when they’re eating out and the waiter usually doesn’t bring the bill unless you ask for it! Remember: A tavola non s’invecchia mai! (One doesn’t grow old at the dinner table)

– Not saying thank you or please: sometimes Italians don’t GRAZIE – thank you or PER FAVORE – please but that doesn’t mean they aren’t grateful! This usually happens among family members or friends. Italians might seem impolite but sometimes they’re just more direct with people they know very well. Or other times you can use other words to show gratitude or to make requests. For example, instead of saying “mi passi il sale?” – “can you pass me the salt” some people use the more polite form “mi passeresti il sale?” – literally: “would you pass me the salt?”.

So, have you experienced any of these situations? Do you think it’s rude or just Italian? Let me know in the comments!👇💬

  1. As a Slovenian, italian neighbour 🇸🇮, i dont think they are rude.
They are just loud and outgoing, sociable, extrovert.
In my country ppl are more reserved, quiet, cold so i dont find italians rude at all.
    Its just their cultural norm.

  2. As I was walking up to a register to check out an Italian lady ran around me and skipped me in line. Would that be considered a norm?
