In this video, I’ll show you some delicious Keto food we enjoyed during our five day trip to Rome, Italy. It might give you some ideas on what you can try out if you end up traveling there or if you need some ideas for Keto meals in general.

But first a little back story about our relationship with cheese and milk products:
When we’re at home in Vienna, we only eat cheese very rarely, as it is easy to overeat and we’re leaner and feel a little better without it. Also, we noticed that we get some negative reactions like pimples and worse digestion from ‘normal’ dairy milk products – except butter, which is perfectly fine. That’s why when we do eat cheese every once in a while, we try to stick to buffalo, sheep and goat milk products, as we seem to tolerate those better.

And since those cheeses are much better in Italy than in Austria, we decided a while back not to have any at home, but to have as much of them as we want whenever we travel to Italy, which is typically once to twice a year.

As you can see, we ate a ton of cheese and milk products, probably way more than anyone should eat in such a short amount of time, during our five days in Rome. We once again noticed that cheese is very easy to overeat for being so calorie-dense and both of us put on a little weight afterwards. Mostly water, but still. So if your weight-loss is stalling, I definitely recommend cutting out cheese and milk products (apart from butter) for a while.

Another thing worth noting:
As you probably know we’ve been following a mostly carnivore style ketogenic diet since first trying it out in February, as we don’t feel the need to add veggies to our meals on most days and generally feel better without. In this case, since we were staying with my grandma we made sure to always add some low carb veggies like zucchini or spinach to our meals so she doesn’t worry about our health if she sees us only eat meat.

That’s the crazy thing – none of our relatives would ever worry about our health if they saw us eating sweets all the time, drinking soft drinks and starting our day with sweetened cornflakes or some other junk. But as soon as they see you eat a nutritious meal like eggs with bacon and butter for breakfast or a steak without any sides they start to worry, as they’re so heavily influenced by the dietary dogma and lies they’ve been told over the past few decades about fat, cholesterol and meat. Sadly these beliefs run so deep that they’re very hard to let go until you start looking into it more closely and experience it for yourself.

Oh and lastly, we are not saints, so if it’s worth it, we do cheat sometimes while we’re on vacation. We cheated three times in Rome: Once on a piece of chocolate cake which my aunt made just for us without flour – using only eggs, dark chocolate, butter and sugar (I made sure to tell her about sugarfree sweeteners like erythritol after) and we added some heavy cream on top. And the other two times while we were in the city, we shared a delicious gluten-free tiramisu and each had a small ice-cream. So as you can see, while we’re really strict with what we eat at home because we really value feeling and looking our best, when we travel we do sometimes make exceptions – but only if it’s worth it.

  1. What do you think of having whey, and whey protein supplements on the keto diet?
    I know they are a great source of protein but will it still it cause the same problems that dairy causes?

  2. Happy Thanksgivings from Phoenix . Nice looking cheeses , mozzarella , sharp cheddar , blue , Limburger are my favorites . Maybe be four times a month I have cheese but it's a good gainer or looking to put muscle on .

  3. I could not agree with you more. As a Canadian with Italian origins living in Calabria keeping keto is so difficult here simply because of the lack of understanding of the diet. I’m not a fan of carnivore keto and do feel best when partaking in in clean keto I enjoy my veggies and what not but sheesh when I say here I’m sorry I’m off carbs right now my insulin is spiked and they say “come on just a little pasta won’t hurt you” I often cannot cope so thank you so much for this information was great. Finding keto product here is really difficult and expensive however I finally found my “go to” place for all my keto needs 🙂
