Bona Vacantia.
Sounds like a fancy Italian wine, right?
🍷 It’s not.
It’s Latin for “ownerless goods.”
And in the UK, that’s exactly what your estate becomes if you die without a will or without known heirs.
Let’s break this down 👇
📉 Just last month, the UK government released a list of 5,806 unclaimed estates.
That’s thousands of people whose homes, bank accounts, and businesses were forfeited to the Crown.
Why?
➡️ No will.
➡️ No next of kin.
➡️ No plan.
💔 Among them: 58 Nigerians.
People who worked, saved, and built wealth — but never secured it.
As a medic, you’ve spent your life training, qualifying, and working harder than most.
You save lives. You sacrifice holidays. You show up on-call and on mission.
But let me ask you:
Are you protecting everything you’ve built?
Or are you just hoping it all works out?
Because here’s the reality:
👉🏾 IMGs and medics abroad are especially vulnerable to financial and tax mistakes.
And if we don’t plan, everything we’ve worked for can disappear overnight.
What to do (starting today):
📑 Write a will
🛡️ Protect your assets
🧾 Make sure your legacy goes to your loved ones, not the state
Because in this case?
Bona Vacantia isn’t something you want to toast to. 🥂
