  4. I can understand northern Europe not using AC, but Italy??? Spain??

    My city, San Jose, California, is on the same latitude as Athens, Greece.

    It certainly gets hot in San Jose! 45 Celsius is not an usual temperature in summer. I would imagine Athens is similar.

    Surely the Greeks, at least, use AC?

    I know the Japanese use almost the same amount of AC as the Americans. 🙂

  6. I think its funny how people will complain about the tipping culture in the US while at the same time bemoaning the crappy service in European countries. It's almost as if tying your pay to your job performance makes a difference in the quality of service you receive. While most servers in the US make $2.32/hr before tips, if they are good at their jobs they will average between $20 and $30/hr.

  7. The difference is that in Italy waiters are paid. They don’t have to annoy us every minute. I don’t tip anywhere in the world and surely not in the US. The restaurant owners should pay there staff, that’s what we wrote on the not. No tip, tell your boss to pay you instead of annoying us every minute with your fake smile.

  9. I eat at 6:30 pm max 7 pm. And I am italian. Eating late is something for some places in south Italy or Rome.

  10. I love the waiter or waitress coming to the table every two minutes especially while mouth is full while eating asking "everthing's ok?.." here in the US. 😅 (Because they have to). 😂

I am Spanish and it is true that here in Europe sometimes the waiters take a while to serve you (I also have to say that people tend to be patient because most of the time, here in Spain at least, they are underpaid, they work more hours than stated in their contract and we do not give tips as large as in the USA to compensate for those low salaries, and there are usually few waiters compared to the number of diners, in fact, as a consequence of all this, in Spain now there is a crisis, there are no waiters, because people are no longer willing to work in these bad conditions, so, as I said, we customers tend to be patient if we see the waiters in a hurry, what we do not like is when they are not doing anything and do not serve us, but if they have a lot of work we try to be patient). But despite these shortcomings, I can’t stand the US style either. I don’t like it at all when the waiter stays at my table for ( and each) 2 minutes asking me if everything is okay and if I need anything, especially if I haven’t asked him to come closer, because he’s constantly interrupting the conversation, and here in Europe food isn’t just about eating, it’s also about chatting (and I’m not going to mention the waitresses who tell you things like: “I love your style, I love your sweater…” I don’t like flattering people at all) . As with almost everything in life, the middle ground is perfect: the waiter who stands at a certain distance (so that he is not listening or interrupting conversations unnecessarily) but who is constantly looking at the tables and who, as soon as you make a slight gesture with your hand or head or look, immediately approaches the table – for me that is perfect attention.
