In 2007, Joe Scaravella, who’d recently lost his parents and grandmother, opened an unlikely restaurant on New York’s Staten Island: Enoteca Maria, where dishes were prepared by Italian grandmothers cooking treasured regional dishes. The restaurant has since expanded to feature “Nonnas” from around the world, preparing Greek, Japanese, Spanish and Egyptian dishes as well, and has inspired a new Netflix film, “Nonnas” starring Vince Vaughn. Correspondent Jon Wertheim takes a seat at the table.

  1. Every region of Italy has it's own dialect and distinct culture influenced by centuries of Etruscan,Greek, Roman, Norman, Arab, Spanish, German and French Napoleon invaders to name a few who left their mark in many marvelous ways offering us many of those recipes today we love so much!

  2. I love the stories you do that bring to the forefront the goodness of people. This place is fantastic. Joe's idea that eating is about comfort not about mass production and clawing to the top of some silly list is amazing. Thank you.

  3. Loved this it makes me want my mother's food, l am italian so l learned from her but to this day , not as good as she was, warm memories smelling the meatballs and sausage, neckbones that go in the gravy, nothing like it, also good conversation and no phones, only the one on the wall, luv to all the nonnas and mother's. ❤

  4. This is the essence of what makes America so special. We are and will always be a melting pot of all the best of humanity.

  5. GREAT PIECE – indeed we need more places like this throughout our Nation where "it is all made with Love" from All the Immigrant Grandmothers of this Nation wherher your faimly settled here in 1619 or before or they came jusy this year, 2025.
We are a Nation built by Immigrants who tried to recove the Native Americans but then learned to accept, appreciate, honor and love and visa versa for the Native Americans of hhe Immigrants.
May We the People of this Nation continue to remind trumpy and his illegal administration of this Fact and Truth.

  6. OMG WHAT A GREAT IDEA…..NONNAS ALWAYS PUT LOVE INTO THEIR FOOD……PLEASE EXPAND THIS TO MANHATTAN …I WOULD GO IN A HEARTBEAT.

  8. The best part of this story, but of course was conveniently left out and not mentioned, was the beginning , where it shows all the immigrants coming in.. the right way!

  9. I couldn't get thru this news clip without crying. I'm not sure I can watch the movie yet but God bless this man and all the Nonnas.

  14. I watched the movie yesterday and can't stop thinking about it….I so appreciate the movie did NOT make the older ladies "nonnas" look or sound "less than" like many movies do….I liked the movie yesterday and today, I love it.

  15. I’m a resident in this neighborhood and had an anniversary dinner there a few years back. The nonna on duty that evening was from Turkey. Delicious meal. I will return one day.
