“We knew an America that was liberal, and was the guarantor of the freedom in the world. Today pretty much everything has changed, and tariffs will harm everybody, they will harm America too. It will create inflation and the most affected ones will be the less reach, not those who will have to pay 20% more to buy a Ferrari, a person who spends half a million to buy a car will not care at all, but the less reach will pay for it.”

8. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Salvatore Perugini, local resident:
“I don’t think such measures are fair and it does not bring us towards cohesion. I am for cohesion in the world, so I believe that this is something that instead will divide, will split the world even more, that’s why I think it’s not such a great idea. Having said that, he (Trump) must have his own reasons, since he says he is for “America First,” so let’s see what will happen.”

14. SOUNDBITE (English) Nicola Borri, professor of finance at LUISS University:
“So Italy is a country that risks being severely affected by these new sets of tariffs. We already know that the automotive and component sectors is affected, actually this, we expected it because tariffs on the automotive sector were already in place, now the risk is that other important sectors like fashion and for example, food, wine, will be also affected. In these sectors like high fashion and wine, the margins that typically producers have are larger, so perhaps there is a bit of room for Italian firms to adjust in sense the prices to limit the drop in their export.”

STORYLINE:
Italians reacted on Thursday after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed new tariffs on imports from the European Union.

Trump announced a 20% tariffs on EU products, a move many say represent the opposite of what America has stood for so far, free market above all.

“We knew an America that was liberal, and was the guarantor of the freedom in the world. Today pretty much everything has changed, and tariffs will harm everybody, they will harm America too,” said Sandro Bufacchi, a former businessman.

Another resident said he felt imposing the tariffs would make the world more divided.

“I believe that this is something that instead will divide, will split the world even more, that’s why I think it’s not such a great idea,” Salvatore Perugini told the Associated Press in Rome.

Most analysts agree tariffs will generate higher good prices and ultimately inflation.
