In this episode of the No Sediment Wine Podcast, I sit down with Henry Jeffreys, award-winning wine writer, journalist, co-host of the podcast Intoxicating History, and author of the book “Vines in a Cold Climate”. Among many exciting topics, we explore Britain’s sparkling wine scene, discuss whether British wines justify their price compared to Champagne, examine the financial realities facing British winemakers, and dive into wine writing, criticism, and the ongoing battle against wine snobbery.

Best interview of a British Wine 🍷 professional ever Agnese ❤❤
Hotel chain as sponsor is the best
Another good interview, Agnese. While you were chatting I looked on the Wine Society website; there are a few white Burgundies between £12 and £20: I have tasted a couple of them and I'd say they were good value.
On the topic of impartial wine writing, it really is a problem. I now buy from mainly one merchant, whose buyers I trust, and don't spend too much time reading other people's opinions. There are three or four YouTubers whose content I enjoy but I haven't bought a wine book for more than 20 years. Also, I hardly ever read wine columns in newspapers or magazines these days for the simple reason that I just don't trust them any more. I am fortunate that I have built a modest collection that will probably see me out.
I can't agree with Henry about wine not being special. I once was a beer bore (my brother bought me CAMRA membership for my 18th in 1973, which was only one or two years after it was founded. I also used to enjoy good brandy and a cigar after a decent dinner with friends. I have not touched whisky since a Burns night tasting many years ago. Wine is my only alcoholic pleasure nowadays and I cannot see the day when I will drink much beer or any spirits in the future – there is just too much good wine to enjoy.
On English (not British) wine, I drink some sparking wines but not much else for all the reasons Henry gave.
Overhyped? I don't know. Overpriced already? For sure.
Nice guy
English sparkling wine was voted best sparkling wine of the world in 2024 (Knightor – Cornwall).
Thanks!
Agnese if i was rich i would send you DRC Monopole and Montrachet great vintages
❤🎉❤🎉
What a fantastic and insightful discussion
Have tried many a UK sparkling, still prefer a good priced growers champagne.
Wow! What refreshing, no punches pulled honesty! From both of you! And on so many points. Understanding the casual wine drinker. The economic pressure on wine writers/critics. Making wine appealing to younger drinkers. Henry was absorbing. I would have welcomed another hour. 🍷❤👍
