Alex Krause, the owner of Birichino vineyards in Santa Cruz, got into the wine business in an unusual way. Instead of starting small and building up to a big export business, he did the opposite. He made a rare type of Italian wine and sold it to the Quebec government in 2008. From there, he expanded to selling locally. He has a tasting room in Downtown Santa Cruz, but exports still make up most of his business. President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada and other nations led to retaliation from Canada. Krause’s wines are no longer for sale.
