Ayyyeee happy Wednesday!!! BIG QUESTION! Have you ate something… that so was good it made you want to cry? 😂
Have u ever gotten your produce from a farm shop in the netherlands? Most of the produce you get in the city is just imported stuff. In my opinion we have some of the best in the world. Those countries just know how to prepare the food in a way it shines.
You should try the Lidle, there fresh veggies and fruits are better than jumbo an AH and the Lidle get as much lokal as possible, they are winning best prices for this about 8yrs in a row now🎉
We have a saying about the Italians:
"Most people eat to live, the Italian people live to eat."
Dinner is probably THE most important part of the day for Italians.
They don't spare the time nor the expense for a good hours long dinner.
It's been many years since I want to Italy and I still dream about the food..
Loving it, been to Spain and Itaky and there is definitely some amazing food over there.
Now I'm not from NOLA, but in my humble opinion Cajun food gives alot of foods a run for it's money, and my family is from Spain and Italy, I just love a good Gumbo🥰.
Their Jambalaya reminds me of a good paella, so tasty!!!
I can't already count anymore how many times I've been in the Netherlands and they have good quality of food. The taste is good but it's quite flat from taste, not rich like in many other countries in Europe. Although they adopted a lot of food from Indonesia (the most rich cuisine in the world for me) but the Dutch forgot to adopted the spices in their Duch Indonesian cuisine. And don't misunderstand me, I like Dutch food too, but's different.
Oh good, you tried actual decent food for once haha. Proper Italian food is good. The stuff that gets passed off for Italian food in other countries… meh, no. Not the same stuff.
There's a reason the Italians are so darn proud of their food. They should be.
I'd say 'same with the French', but personally I am so sick and tired of hearing the term 'French cuisine'… to me it stands for 'pretentious and overpriced' usually. Sure, it's probably great and all that, but it's not the be all end all of all food. I much prefer food from countries outside of France. Greek, Turkish, Indian, any type of Asian food… good food done well without all the bells and whistles and the high and mighty attitude, you know?
French are just really good at bread and pastries, I say to absolutely no one's surprise. Just the through of freshly baked bread from France makes my mouth water. And it's not just croissants and all the buttery goodness, but just simple bread like baguettes and rolls. It's on another level, in my opinion.
Dutch food, in comparison, is boring, bland, lacks seasonal nutrition in a lot of cases since it was grown in greenhouses when it comes to veggies. It doesn't compare favorably against the Italians, for example. We do have decent bread I suppose, even though a lot of it are recipes from other places.
I'm from Belgium, and there were Dutch people saying themselves that the food here is better than in Belgium. That's also my opinion.
Does it mean that food in US is worse than in Netherlands?
I feel like fruit and vegetables in the USA have been dumbed down through breeding for things like endurance and crispness. The apples are horrible, they’re super crispy and tasteless. It’s hard to find restaurants that cook real food from scratch.
☕️🥷☕️
You sure it was chicken? Or was it a dove? 😉
dutch food sucks, bro…as amber ruffin has said, 'there is a land that flavor forgot, and it is called the netherlands' – also this is calvinism. you're not supposed to enjoy things of the body, like taste! even Belgium is better…always eat in a catholic country.
In the rural areas of France where I have a house, I generally do not find fresher products. The cheese is much more diverse but it has enormous amounts of saturated fats and sodium. The Dutch call it Natrium by the way and the chemical symbol internationally, is Na. Potash, same story. Is derived from the Dutch words "Pot and As" but in reality it is called Kalium, chemical symbol K.
Anyways, in France I bought red onions and the fruit flies came out of it and they were slimey. So it depends what region you do groceries and what supermarket.
We always have been a people of farmers that needed simple, honest and nutritious food to keep going (stamppot). Sophistication was not a priority. Being the only Republic in 17th century Europe, ruled by self made rich, but down to earth merchants, The Netherlands had no serious nobility and upperclass by birth to make the refinements and imbed that in our culture
What I never understand is why people in these so-called food deserts don't grow their own vegetables. If anything, the States has space, people in suburbs have gardens.
As a chef i went around Europe for the food. Going on vacations with colleagues just to eat, taste and learn. My experience is that the North of Spain has the best food, so if you are planning a new trip, try it out!
Makes sence, different soil and such, also buy the veggies here from a Groenteman when there in season, and both the vegetables and fruits taste better. just because there not from a greenhouse. And well different soil and climate does make it tate different, same if its inported frozen and not yet ripen when put in the supermarkets so it wil go bad later.
Napoles (Italie) guy I once met told me in Napoli they sell dutch tomatoes in the supermarket. So who knows where the vegetables come from in the rest of europe 🙂
It could be the way they're prepped too, the dutch are not known for seasoning their food a lot.
Hehe nice video man. Glad you all enjoyed your holiday!
And on the food subject…..I do not consider it a shame to loose out to Italy and France. It is simply better. Personally I think the difference is indeed cultural. In the Netherlands we want it to be good and accessible but primarily for health reasons. We Dutchies still view food from a efficiency standpoint….as fuel. You want it to be good fuel but in the end it is still a tool. A means to an end.
In Italy and France it is far more. It is a RELIGION! And as a result they have far more emphasis on local produce, recipes with longer cooking time, flavour, heritage etc. You can taste the love and effort that goes into it. In the Netherlands you 'taste the efficiency' 😉
Culturally and Historically Dutch food has always been nutritional value and being able to preserve it for a long time. Italian and French cuisine and lifestyles have always prioritized relaxation an d family values. That shows how food is treated. Additionally Italy and France have a much better climate to grow fruits and vegetables outside of a greenhouse, which unfortunately Dutch weather is forced to for most of the year.
The best food in Europe is found in the Mediterranean
Did you ever eat at Piccolo 's on the "Grote Markt"? Best Italian food in Haarlem
The comparisson about france and Italy… It's like the perenial question: Why did Ceasar cross the Rubicon (which was a muddy little stream anyway). The aswer is; He smelled home cooking!.
Go home N
The Netherlands just isn't really a food culture. We eat and it has to be good, but it doesn't have to be incredibly good and delicious every time. Now my parents' roots were in Indonesia and that's a food culture like Italy and France. The people are so critical of their food and everything is good quality. Same like Thailand, Spain, Turkiye or Vietnam. It is indeed cultural.
De Italiaan in Amsterdam is excellent, curious what you think.
European food is really great but dutch food is not for me man. But to be honest I do miss a lot of meals from the states
US too, in some local 'cultural' spots: gumbo, collard greens, southern cooking in very local non-chain (!!) establishments – Mississippi can taste amazing too! Fresh fish along the Gulf: awesome. Rare finds though.
US food: the chains just focus on economy. Never go to chains: let the chef adapt the meal to how ingredients arrive. Dump chain restaurants! Like, dump all chains and you will often get a more creative pure result. The idea that local supermarkets in DC get their strawberries from California instead of from Maryland or Virginia is kind of crazy, isn't it. In Italy, you get Italian, in Portugal, Portugese, in Greece, Greek veggies and fruits. Of course this is excellent! Salmon though is North Sea or Atlantic, often Norwegian.
idk if you did already, but for good fruits in the netherlands, you should also visit (next to the market) a good togo (surinamese, turkish caribean) almost the same experience
Ciao sky, here an italian who live almost 21 years in The Netherlands. You can make your own italian food at home. In Rotterdam we had a few italian stores for the original ingrediants we also use in Italia. The next time when yiu visit italia again you had to go more to the south for the real real italian culture. Everything whats north of Rome is rich and more central europe culture. Bari the city where i born 41 years ago its the real deals ore Napoli/Napels. Look the citys on youtube.
Greetz feom Rotterdam!
Food in the Netherlands is more about consistency. Its highs aren't as good as in countries like Italy, but its lows are still very respectable. Just solid, filling meals.
Dutch culture is more based around engineering, similarly to Germany. You see it everywhere: street design, public transport, general infrastructure, water management, etc.
