Umbria is the “green heart of Italy,” a distinction that becomes immediately clear upon entering this often overlooked region of central Italy. After previously visiting the Umbrian capital of Perugia (see our video!), we now make our way to the two small but storied hilltop towns of Assisi and Spoleto. Assisi is a famous pilgrimage site, home to St. Francis, who founded the Franciscan order. His basilica is the main attraction, but so are the incredible above-cloud views of the Umbrian countryside. From Assisi, we take a 30-minute train south to Spoleto. The town is a mesmerizing maze of winding streets, Roman ruins, formidable fortresses, and one of Italy’s most scenic bridges. We highly recommend a day or two in each town. A good to know: Spoleto can be reached by direct train from Rome.
