For the money, if you enjoy that selection seems ok yo me.
Nice video Stu… I can guarantee you one thing you will not get a sit down meal anywhere in Southern California like that for $15. No way No How. From what I can see that was absolute excellent value.👏👏👏. Each to their own , but I don’t know if I would complain about not getting the class of house red. Seriously that’s some excellent value.
When i first came to Spain donkeys years ago, most bars offering Menu del Dia were independent / family run places. 3 courses each was standard – here in the north, one "spoon", one rice/ pasta/, one salad or veg. / 2nd Meat, fish, and possibly eggs.
I am suspicious of those offering a lot more choices than that tbh!!
Typical, non-exciting, menu del dia served in so many outlets in Spain. Don't get me wrong, I love a good menu del dia but I've had so many non events like this over the years. Whenever I bomb out with something like this I always regret not buying a good quality bocadillo instead for one quarter of the price. It's even worse when there are two involved because $28 euros for a mediocre meal which makes you feel like you've just thrown your money away. You could have a fantastic meal at home for that kind of money. The final insult is knowing you could make the dish you just ordered much better yourself. There's just some person in the kitchen chucking this stuff out without any pride.
How much did you tip? Thanks!
There are still some great places selling excellent value menus. Last year I had a couple of fantastic ones in Palencia and some small villages outside. I found an absolute gem in Valladolid near my relatives. Pais Vasco (Basque Country) always delivers outside the cities. I know a number of guaranteed great value joints in my own patch in rural Andalucia. I could go on and on but it seems to me that the best places are always where the place is family run. Quality matters and they want customers to be happy rather than just another ticket. I have a nose for good places but sometimes you have to look around. This place Stuart went in to looked like a predictable mediocrity from the outset.
The food on their a la carte menu may be of better quality and may be more prepared immediately after ordering.
I thought it looked pretty good.
Those sausages at the beginning mixed in with the rissotto would work for me.
For me it was a lot of food for the cost incurred. I'd have paid extra for a coffee with a dessert. Water for me better than wine or beer with that meal which would be heavy and way too much for me. Looked fine even if underwhelming. Like you say comfort or warm food on a rainy day. Sometimes you just have to make it work.
A quién se le ocurre poner en un restaurante lacón como segundo plato, como mucho sería una tapa!
Hi Stuart. Just wondering, when you were living in Western Australia, did you eat kangaroo meat?, and if you did, what is your opinion of same?. I'm really enjoying your food videos. Take care, Michael.
In the UK the tapas would be charged as an extra. Tapas £4.95, Risotto £7.95, Ham £9.95, dessert £3.50, 1/2 pt premium beer £2.95. Total £29.30 ie. 35.16 euros. That would be in a pub chain. In a modern restaurant that would likely be around £40 or 48 euros.
However, the dessert looked like an afterthought. Very disappointing
Looks like lots of Rashers and potatoes
The restaurant looked nice , and I thought the selection was ok although limited. For the price , quantity and quality, I thought it was a good deal. Perhaps the weather played a part on how you scored. Great review Stu.
13 buck meal and you wanted wine can you get that down in kangaroovile
A bloody fantastic bargain, as are most menús del día in Spain. It’s almost impossible to go wrong in Spain unless you eat at a chain restaurant. Nowadays you would have to pay an extra €7-10 just to get the beer and the first course, here downunder in Australia.
Great value, compared to U.S prices
No wine included? immediate red flag!
Hi Stuart, I know in comparison to other countries like the USA, UK and Australia, the value for money is outstanding, but compared to what we expect here in the Costa Blanca North, I thought that meal was pretty poor.
Come and try bar Colors in Oliva. A three course meal plus bread and drink (yes, glass of wine if you want) for 12€, usually about ten items choice on each course and always well cooked, hearty food. Lovely home made desserts too. If you are dining as a couple, say, and want a bottle of wine instead of two glasses, they only add on a euro or two for the house wine.
good frank review Stuart.
Where I live in Ecuador I am partners is a restaurant that serves a lunch of the day. We have one choice of soup, two choices of meal and one choice of salad, with a fresh squeezed fruit juice included. The choices change almost every day though usually the main dish is a pork chop or a bepreast of chicken. $4.00.
My spouse makes everything as a mother would, all fresh local ingredients and with love. We've just opened two months ago and we have a usual crowd. Our usual menu is BBQ wings and smoked meat dishes, highest price is a tomahawk for $15.
38 years in Spain, never in the most “turista” areas of the centre of Madrid have I ever heard of a Menu del dia without wine!!
Being Irish segundo needed cabbage! 😆
The mushroom risotto would be my choice to be on the same plate as the ham and spuds
Not an exciting meal, very dull colour-wise, but still good value. A little side salad would have made it better visually.
Just tried arepas in Tenerife for the first time. You should try them in a food review.
You'd probably pay £50+ for that in broken Britain!
Definitely would have opted for the caballa fish. Reckon you would have been less disappointed BUT I would have had to order a separate glass of white wine – so NOT a bargain. Dessert choice unexciting too. Chistorra sausage a nice tapas touch all said. 😊
Presentation of each dish was shocking. Price OK.
