Hi guys! As you may know, last year around this time I slipped and fell in Italy and busted up my ankle pretty good. As unhappy as I was about this, I was happy about the fact that I was now in a position to comment on my personal experiences with Italian medical care vs American medical care.
Most expats or those wanting to be expats in Italy have health care on their minds a lot and in fact, this is a big factor in deciding where they ultimately want to live. So grab a coffee and let’s chat about the health care in Italy and how it stacks up agains the health care in American. I think you might be surprised.

Hi Chris I bought my little apartment from Rino and Paula at One Stop Majella Casa in Abruzzo. They are amazing. I can't wait to get there… They're fabulous. How did you hook up with Rino? Gina in Upstate New York USA moving to Europe in 2025, Glad you had a great experience. I am wondering how when I apply for residency in Portugal how the insurance works when I am in Italy. For the first year I have to have private. I am working with Expat Portugal's referral of EI their lawyers, accountants and relocation people are amazing. I did have an appointment with Nick Meta he was amazing, You were in the hospital when I was in Matera for my birthday in January last year. I wanted to come visit you but I did not want you to feel I was stalking you. I was torn. I wasn't sure you were up for a visitor now I regret it. I could have brought you a Cappuccino….LOL Oh well in Puglia or Scalea one day…
So glad it all worked out 🙂
Prilosec is typically prescribed for those with chronic heartburn.. so it calms things down. Keep up the great work ❤
Wherever I choose to eventually retire in Italy, it will definitely be close to a larger hospital and specialized doctor clinics.
You can take the girl out of Italy, but sometimes it creeps back in "Soma dis e soma dat…" @ 4:32
Hi Chris! Thank you for sharing your story. Love the cake story!! 😂
Can you clarify your insurance situation? Were you a resident? If not, were you on private? If you are not a resident and if you do not carry private insurance, emergencies are covered? Also, I love One Stop! Looking forward to seeing the conversation.
So glad that you and Rino made contact! Yours and Rino’s are my two favorite channels!!!! I think I’ve been a subscriber of Rino’s since his very first videos, and suggested to him that your and Pete’s transparent and ethical styles would likely be very compatible and might help you both. Really looking forward to seeing the video! Abbracci da Fort Bragg, CA!
I witnessed first hand your medical adventure, can we call it an adventure? You had a very significant fracture and yes, you received excellent care. So glad you have made a full recovery. As you know I contracted hepatitis A from spoiled seafood. I was so ill and incredibly weak for weeks. You and Pete stepped up to help me for which I am eternally grateful. The care I received was so thorough. As a retired RN with 42 years of service, 20 as a critical care nurse, I know about health care. The medical team treating me was excellent. It’s a remarkable health care system here. Dedicated professionals willing to go the extra mile to care for you.
Not surprised to hear about taking out the stitches without anesthetic. Healthcare can be great in Italy, but there's a trend to think that the patient can endure some pain, if it's for the greater good. So they tend to use as few medicines as possible, just the bare minimum, because each medicine does have some side effects. I've experienced this a lot in Italy. Great video.
It's always nice to see when your favorite YouTubers join forces :-). I can't wait to see you both. 🙂 I have already seen such 'get-togethers' of other YouTubers showcasing life in Italy, and it is always a great initiative. Hope you and OneStopAbruzzo will have great fun together. 🙂
Allowing dogs in your hospital room is reason enough to move to Italy
Sounds like the best possible care. I love it. I’m in Rome and looking to explore options of moving to Italy. Healthcare is a major factor for me ❤🙏🏾
Keep it to yourself, ive been living and raising my family in italy for the last 35 years … certainly, you know about the last ten years, takeover of the partito democratico? Nuff said.
Agreed. I had emergency surgery in Italy for perforated gallbladder. Four days of Intensive care and then hospitalized for 26 days. No pain at all. How can there be pain when you see one handsome doctor after the other? Back at home the hospital sent a physical therapist three times a week. I am fully recovered.
HI Chris-great topic A point of clarification please. At the time of the accident, what was your visa status? While we are on the topic, if I were there on a tourist visa for say 2 months and had an accident, all I. currently have is USA Medicare. Also, or perhaps another viewer can pipe in; is there a supplemental travel insurance one can purchase to address medical while out of your home country>
thanks
So agree with the excellent medical care in Italy. I'm British but have lived in Italy since I was 19. I've had a couple of life-threating illnesses plus numerous less important issues over the years, in different parts of Italy, and can only give words of praise for the medical service.
It's not crostino (toasted bread) but crostata (cake with fruit or jam)
If I'm not mistaken it was Ronald Reagan who made an agreement
with the Italian government, I remember when my wife and I came
to Las Vegas in 1993, I am an Italian citizen, I did not need to buy
insurance, my wife, an Australian citizen, instead had to do it.
Las Vegas is BELLISSIMA, but Italy is much more. Best wishes for your foot ❤ Ciao
Here in Italy we have great medical care and great doctors and nurses .our national healthcare works and it's public .it's a great sign of high civilization.
