Have you ever thought about renovating a historic home? What about restoring one that burned? No? Probably for the best…lol. This level of work is absolutely not for the faint of heart. It’s not easy, it’s not fast, and it’s not fun. What we know it will be is rewarding, and that’s what is keeping us going!
So, what exactly is going on? Pretty much everything. Master carpenter John Cooper is still working his magic turning burned cypress beams into windows and doors. Artist, painter, and magician Matthew Charles McGinley absolutely transformed the façade with trompe l’oiel marble using Beeck Mineral Paints. Marcus Buffington is overseeing a team of electricians running literally miles of new electrical, and Brian Lucey Plumbing is making sure that all our pipes are in a row…or something like that.
It’s also time to start window restoration. This is going to be monumental undertaking in this home. Every window in the house was either completely destroyed by the fire, or suffered from charring and shattered glass. So, each and every sash that remains has to be removed, stripped, glazing removed, cleaned, sanded, primed, painted, and re-glazed. This is going to be a LONG process.
We are also tackling getting the layers of paint off the porch ceiling, cutting out the last of the visible fire damage, prepping woodwork for new coats of paint, and moving daily toward our first set of inspections. Will we be getting drywall up as soon as the new year? Maybe….maybe not. Only time will tell.
We are also constantly making new discoveries in this 300 year old historic home. Just when we think we’ve uncovered all the surprises there could possibly be, we uncover even more. She’s the gift that keeps on giving!
Lastly, we have some questions about just how old the oldest part of this structure actually is. One school of thought says that the earliest period of the home (1720’s) left no existing structure. But we have some pretty convincing evidence from the personal writings of the first European to own the property that tells us that maybe, just maybe, part of this home we own may indeed be 301 years old! Tell us what you think!

Love all this progress! But not going to lie, Bones is my favorite part! ❤️
I loved this episode!! It had all the things. A beautiful faux finish, old windows, architectural history lessons, salvage, misinformed weather vane enthusiasts and one big awesome kitty cat. All of my favorites!! Everything is looking very marvelous. Thank you for the video, as always 😁
Thanks so much for the update. It was so interesting with all the different topics and introducing all the different craftsmen and sourcing of materials. I look forward so much for each new update.
John always impresses me! He and Matthew are such artists!!!
Such a good overview & update. I love the education you bring to all of us. Thank you so much!
I don't know much about construction (have learned a lot from you though), but I have done genealogy for over 30 years (before internet available). So I understand the question or "your wrong" responses. I was trying to find my Chickasaw family that moved from Mississippi. Found my G-G-Grandfather coming from there. He came with 2 women over 50 (his mother had already died) and 3 young women under 14, 6 young males under 14. On the trip a girl and a boy was born (my G-Grandfather) on the trip. Both born separately within a month of each other. Family history does say he was married 2 times, but he was a good Christian so he did not believe in polygamy. Well, the girls' mother died from her birth. When they checked in here in Indian Territory, the was him, 1 woman over 50, 3 girls under 14, 1 newborn girl, 6 males under 14 and 1 newborn male. My family get mad at me every time I even suggest he had 2 wives at once. But he was from the chief's lineage (the last hereditary chief). Prior to Christianity chiefs might have up to 5-6 wives. Yes, he may have been a Christian, but these 2 children were not the only born ones zigzagging dates.
This is looking magnificent! Your attention to detail is what makes this such a special restoration. I’m glad you’re using wavy glass in the sashes. It’s always wonderful to get updates on this wonderful property. Thank you both!
Thank you for sharing the progress and teaching us so much! Another awesome Video! Let me be the First To Say… Thank You for tolerating all of our cray cray responses! AND a GENTLE Reminder that ALL of us as Viewers can click on the 3-vertical Dots to the right of every comment and REPORT it as an inappropriate post. Laine & Kevin Big Hugs! B~}
I feel that the history of hope farm is very very interesting
Thank you for this update! The faux marbre looks fantastic, and I enjoyed the artist's knowledgeable explanation of marble formation!
I also agree with your hypothesis that the original owner had that front wall built. Anyone who claims that Native Americans in Louisiana and Mississippi lived in "pole tents" is showing ignorance, and perhaps disparagement, of Native Americans. Pole tents were used by nomadic groups, such as the Plains tribes, because they were portable. Those who lived in settled agricultural communities lived in thatch-roofed cabins or longhouses with wooden walls. They were probably interested in the French building techniques and may have adopted them. But the French owner probably had a house built here using techniques he was familiar with.
When I was young, there was much discussion of putting lightning rods on house roofs. But nothing much came of it. It was thought that such rods might attract lightning, rather than just channel electricity away from the roof. As you said, lightning generally strikes the highest point in an area, so I don't think that there is a lot of proof that lightning rods are effective.
I am following your restoration with a question in mind. That is, how much evidence of the fire is going to be eliminated. The studs of the interior walls seem to still be charred, so I am wondering what you are going to do with those. I am glad to hear of your attempts to undo the damage caused by the fire to important artifacts found in the home.
Great video, as always!
Cherish the weather vain. Not the vain people. I probably didn't spell that correctly but this is my big hug to Laine. We all love the snap back snarky sarcastic Laine that put them lightening people in their place. ALL HAIL THE WEATHER VAIN. hail lol. Cheers.
Thank-you Kevin & Laine for taking the time to keep us up to date on this amazing restoration. Merry Christmas! Much love!❤️🇨🇦
❤❤❤❤❤
The house restoring is amazing from the faux marble to the work done by the workers.
A great video Miss Laine and Mr Kevin. So many things to be excited about. The front faux marble wall is gorgeous as will be those beautiful windows. Its so wonderful to find the right people to do what you need and that they are great humans to enjoy the journey with. Lots of love 🥰🥰🥰
Your passion for this project is so inspiring! You all are truly stewards. Blessings to you both and all your fur babies! Merry Christmas!
People can be so rude, I’m sorry they pooped on your big moment. Just know that so many more of us celebrate your victories and respect you and your work! Big hugs to you both and all the furries.
Love you guys!!
You did a great "vent". Can't stand know it all's that don't know how to control themselves. Long live the weather vane! It's where it needs to be and to function as it was intended/made for. Part of the character of that structure. Great updates on the going on's there and again, you've keep getting blessed with the talent that's needed for the job(s). Love the fur babies!
Teenagers should become plumbers!
Where I live in Washington the high was 31° and the low was 30°.
I recommend Royal Canin Weight Loss canned food for the beautiful kitty. Oyr vet said he needed to reduce his weight very slowly. Half a can in the am and half a can in the pm. It took a year but he lost 6 pounds! SO MUCH BETTER!
My mother's house was built in 1948 and has the same sort of metal runner thingys. I HATE THEM. Think twice before you put them back in. If it is the same system, it is notorious for not working correctly and jamming with the windows halfway open when one is trying to open or close them. The window weights should be good to restore. I think I'm talking about the same sort of system.
Matthew's work is amazing! He also reminds my husband and I of our son so we love him even more!
Laine- whilst it is exposed, is there any way you could get a Dendrochronology date from that headed beam?
Hanging Chad's. Dimpled Chad's. Oh how I remember the recount.
Hope farm is coming along!!!! You're all doing such fantastic work!!! And Matthew is an amazing artist. As I'm sure Austin is as well.
Thanks you – just ordered the miracle sheets for my boyfriend's bday gift… which is a couple days after Christmas… Perfect- he is looking for a cool sheets for his bed. Perfect! Thank you and love your show!!!! You guys crack me up.. Shrek arms… hahaha
Loved this episode. I saved it for when I was able to really watch without being interrupted. So interesting! Thanks for all you do.
Yay, for Mack saving that old wood!❤ I am crazy about old wood and, really, any wood. Ahhhhhh. Don't throw that away! Love your channel❤
Love that you’re putting WAVY glass back into the house. I’ve enjoyed your channel since it began through each of your treasured adventures.
❤❤❤ love the front of the house I can't believe it's not real is just looks so stunning!!! 😮😮😮
Your hypothesis is very convincing. You are both enviable.
Matthew did a great job on explaining the rock and way the formations takes place.
The history of this place is incredible!
We need more Laine and Kevins in the world, chipper and ready to save and enrich. I am continually floored the amount of knowledge they have in architecture. Things I would never think of. Like finding and subsequently restoring the original “stone” façade of the home.
It’s so beautiful. Ending is NOT better than mending.
Love the history.
How incredibly interesting! ❤
I love the details from the book (nice GIFT Kevin!) brownie points for sure! I loved learning all about it! Bossiage? SP unsure. I tried to Google it. I think it's taken me 3 attempts to sit and watch. I been busy of course with Christmas. Laine you sure look like your feeling better and svelte! Enjoyed kitty and the lovey dovey eyes dog gave so adoring.
Have a merry Christmas guys and crew!
Beautiful ❣❣ Good job y'all.
I had a painting business for nearly 40 years with a number of employees. I think the faux finish was irk should have been done last for more than one reason, damage from other subs , further paint removal, final painting would be a lot easier. Good luck with that project , you are very brave!
So much of Laine's unabashed southern sass in this video I love it. ❤❤
Let me be the first to say, BEANS! He's friggen adorable! The kitty is a chonk, and they both were throwing around those love looks! I'm so sorry your moment was ruined by know it alls 😢 I know i don't know a lot about historic homes so that's why I come and listen to you. You guys know alot because you've done your research! But what makes me love your channel so much is the fact that you care about the history cuz you don't want to spread misinformation. Which by the way is all know it alls do so don't let them ruin your day, week, month or even your year.
Oh, I loved this episode so much!! I wished it were longer. Miss Laine, you are looking so pretty!
How did the windows turn out after you steamed them? I'd have thought they would have warped but you know what you're doing for sure!
Can't wait for the next update. Merry Christmas, y'all!
Cheers from North Carolina
