Emirates First Class wine selection is regarded as the best wine experience in the sky. The airline purchases Grand Cru Burgundy, Blue Chip Bordeaux, and Prestige Champagnes in large quantities, ages them for years and serves them at 11000 meters altitude to its richest customers in First.
I travel a lot, and I have always been fascinated by what might be going on in first class but being a wine nerd, I specifically wanted to know what they get to drink. That is why I purchased a return ticket from Emirates and flew to Bangkok in economy class to return in First, so that I was able to see the whole picture.
I paid for the ticket with my own money so that I can COMPLETELY INDEPENDENTLY and critically assess their wine selection and service. So, let’s find out whether the Emirates wine experience is flying high or crashing and burning … shall we?
Emirates is one of the biggest airlines in the world and has established a reputation for quality. As the name would suggest it is based in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. and it is therefore not the most obvious choice to select wine as a key differentiating factor. However, according to their website Emirates has invested 1 billion US Dollars into the wine program since 2006.
They are storing 6.2 million bottles in their wine cellar in Burgundy and they hold those wines back – in some cases for more than a decade.
They currently have 96 different Wines on offer including Champagne, Port, and sweet wine, but the selection varies for different destinations.

I will check out idealwine for sure. A quite large wine distributor that I find consistently overpriced is Millesima Switzerland. Even though I bought from them in the past. I am using winesearcher to help me with my wine purchases. Many times I found bargains from distributors I had never heard before.
I would have not hated this wine selection.
I have a lot of the Chateau Giraud in my cellar, its an excellent quality wine for a quite decent price. I would have loved to try the Clos de Vougeot from Jadot in the skies, I loved it on the ground.
I love this video, very very genuine and enjoyable
You can repeat on the BKK HKG route for less than $500! They also serve Paradis cognac too!
Just because it's you, this is not something that feels like a "just another day in first class" video! Never felt the need to ever go for a first class but maybe this is something id actually like and enjoy for the money. Good for you brother, seemed like a blast!
The Dubai Lounge looks more like a canteen compared to Zurich.
Greetings Mr Baum great video as always!!! if u are interested in the italian wine guide of 2025 i did my first wine video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1s-zcO2xX8
Even basic wine knowledge from the flight attendants? Not doable when considering an ever changing wine menu. And culinary stuff is not what they are trained for. Their main concern is safety.
Thank you Konstantin for taking me on your adventure. Excellent
Really great experience !!! Loved your story. But, only DP ? They are known for more champagnes ? But agree also on your remarks about offering more different regions !
Amazing idea for a video Konstantin! I guess its the name recognition that makes them serve Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne, more than anything else, people who wanna be impressed get impressed. On the other hand, that name recognition is based on great wines and you didnt complain about sipping well aged Grand Cru Burgundy eh? How much was that ticket again?
What a delightful video, not your typical travel log. Thank you Konstantin!
Best wine was Stag’s Leap Chardonnay (Napa Valley) on Emirates between UK and Dubai on Business Class
This was a terrific, unique idea for wine related content.
Best experience for me was on a Lufthansa flight where I was just one of two passengers in business class. The other passenger refused the champagne, so when I said yes to a glass, the flight attendant just set up an ice bucket next to my seat and dropped a full bottle of Dom in it. Spectacular.
"Bog standard" at just after 7 minutes…
Can we now have these kind of videos every week? Konstantin, i know, its a tough job, but somebody has to do it! 😉
More videos like this!!! Please!!! 🎉🎉🎉
Check how many classes the airline has. There is a limit to how good their top class can ever be regarding wine. The next class has to be not as good and the next class to that worse and so on.
Great video Konstantin. My advice to anyone travelling first class on Emirates is:
1. Do not drink in the lounges. The wine is much better on board.
2. The food in the Dubai lounge is very good, particularly at breakfast. Make sure you go to the lounges in the bigger Dubai terminals.
3. Do your research before you board. The wine list is available to view online on their website. There are many wines to choose from and obviously you can't drink them all.
4. There is often luck involved. Occasionally you will have a first growth, a P2 champagne or a Rose champagne.
5. Get changed into the pyjamas straight away. You will feel much more comfortable.
I haven't flow First very often, so can't really comment. In Business, the wine goes from mediocre to really nice. I have some really good experiences, usually the best wines are from Bordeaux. I totally agree that the crew typically knows nothing about wine, even at the best airlines. Worse, the wine is often served at the wrong time (e.g I get my steak but the red only gets served after I finished it or the meat is then cold). Ultimately, the best wine tends to be at home, but long flights are boring, so having a nice glass with some half decent food feels pretty good.
Hmmm I see a new position for you as the global sommelier for Emirates.
How much of the food is included with the ticket?
Crazy idea but fantastic video
Emirates served Vega Sicilia Unico from Dubai to Vienna in First when I flew earlier this year. First time ever I said no to an offer to refill my glass of Dom Perignon, and instead had half a bottle of the VSU for myself 🍷
Very interesting video Konstantin and an enjoyable, entertaining watch. 👍 However…
… Sitting on the toilet in a plane saying the wine is "bog standard", who do you think you are, Noel Phillips? LOL
Qantas has a 'sommeliers in the sky' program and attendants that have completed the course wear a lapel pin (bunch of grapes) so you can pick them out 😁
Best wine I've ever had by far was on a 12 hours Air France flight in First Class, with a coq au vin, the meal was obviously delicious but the wine was enough to bring anyone of us here to tears, literally. The absolutely amazing Château La Mission Haut-Brion 1989 was not only the best wine I tasted above ground, it was one of the best 20 wines I've ever had in my life.
Beer is a better gamble on the planes I ride on.
Master of Wine also a Master of Dance!
Emirate wine selection is probably the biggest outlier in the airline world. Most first class (even Qatar, JAL) won't be nearly as good, they won't even compare to Emirate BC.
JAL serves Salon, so….
