I have the Definition Universal and they are almost an exact copy of the Zalto Universal and have the Zalto Bordeaux wich is almost exactly the same as the Definition Bordeaux. I also own the Gabriel Glas Gold and is probably my favourite universal wine glass.
I'm a wine glass geek because that's the best ROI purchase and upgrade.. Zalto glasses in general are OVER RATED!! Only their burgundy glass is really good, probably the 2nd best for Pinots and Nebs, and only the Sensory glass performs better for those wines. Their universal and Bordeaux is really average at best.. Gabriel Glas Gold is my favourite universal, great for whites and most red except Pinots and Nebs, and it's very sturdy for such a thin glass. For value, the Reidel Performance series is excellent and doesn't cost that bad, and performs really well. It's feels more expensive than what you pay for, and their bordeaux glass is fantastic.
Gabriel Glas stand art edition is awesome. Surprised you didn’t put a Rovsiya in here for the $30 category with slightly larger bowl.
I swear by those Spiegelau glasses! I use those all the time, I prefer the Gabriel Glas Gold, but always worried about breaking it.
Spiegelau is almost the exact copy of the Zalto. They even won an award for being the biggest copycat in Austria and Zalto sued them… I just don't want to support a company with no identity and original Idea.
Really appreciate your energy. You make learning about wine a lot of fun! Cheers Doc!
Spoiler Alert: Sponsored video!
Love your show, thank you for all your hard work. I will be in Napa in a few weeks, do you have any favorites winery experiences there to visit?
Cool video! I did a test like this with Zalto Universal, bordeaux and burgundy glasses. In the end I bought the universal and burgundy glasses. It seemed that most wines I tried were a bit lost in the bordeaux glass because the bowl is so big and the opening so wide. I'm surprised how resiliant they are too, I knocked some of them accidentally against other glasses or the sink and so far, none of them broke.
I compare glasses all the time as I feel it to be both interesting and quite rewarding, and I think I have at least a dozen different glass types from different brands, mostly Riedel I believe.
When it comes to wine glasses, I definitely appreciate a well-made glass. It is also more fun drinking a particular wine variety out of a glass designed for that variety. I think in most cases I'm tasting with one or more other people and those people are usually more important than the wine, unless we are working on a blend or trying to figure something out. So I usually don't fully appreciate a more expensive glass. What does frustrate me is that I tend to like to hold a wine glass by the base when I'm drying the bowl and I have stupidly broken a few too many stems by over torquing. In general, I'm fine with something similar to an old Riedel Vinum Syrah glass that you can often find on sale.
Zalto burgundy for me!
I look for glasses in those shapes, with the thinist rim! I found two in a thrift store for $1.99 each. The thinner the rim for me gives allows the wine to flow better, giving me all the flavors and
body. Glasses do make a difference.
Drinking a Langhe Nebbiolo Giovanni Rosso 2021 right now.
The Spiegelau that you have is pretty standard Bordeaux shape/size. It's nearly identical in shape to the Zalto bdx glass. Burgundy glasses have much more pronounced or angular bowls.

love ZALTO
You should also try out Grassl glasses, they do better than Zalto in most instances. And another thing is that i dont think you can rate glasses when you also use a Bordeaux shape glass as it can make a bigger difference than one think. Not always but it do make differences.
Great video, I’m a bit of a wine glass nerd. I love a really high-quality glass. I really like the Josephinen Hütte glasses, this is a newer company that was actually founded by Kurt Zalto himself. Kurt left the Zalto company and he’s no longer affiliated with that company. The Josephine’s are similar to classic Zalto’s, still ultra thin and light, but the shape is really cool and functionally performs really well. Best glass I’ve ever used imo
I'm happy with the Gabriel-Glas Stand Art-I can use them for everything and you can buy them for $34 a piece
Stolzle Q1 or cheaper Quatrophil
I hadn't planned on shopping for new glasses…until now 😁
Good timing for this video as I’m needed to add some wine glasses and maybe changing up from Riedel. My buddy has the Spiegelau and I really liked them. Might go that route
The Spiegelau is excellent value.
I find Zaltos are too geometric and not worth the ask.
My favourite glass is the Sensory, by Giacomo Conterno. As big a bowl as a Zalto and with a shorter stem. Fits in a dishwasher more easily.
Why not use a Spiegelau Definition Universal to have a more similar comparison with the other 2 universal glasses ?
I fell for the Riedel glass concept that every glass matter idea. I don’t have them after the hurricane hit me. Thanks for the video.
I like glass testing. Nice to try with the Riedel grape (performance) glasses. The spiegelau is now owned by Riedel.
