  1. To be honest we do eat pasta or rice almost every day (Italian speaking here), but not seasoned as the rest of the would think. I eat pasta every day, also twice a day sometimes, but most of the time it's just pasta (sometimes wholegrain pasta) with extra virgin olive oil and chili pepper flakes, and the rest of the times it's pasta seasoned with some vegetables or legumes (pasta with just tomatoes, of just zucchine, peas, chickpeas and so on). Pasta doesn't need to be calorie heavy, it's actually really light if you season it properly (and in the right portion size, of course).
Another thing that makes the difference is, I think, that we mainly use extra virgin olive oil to season almost everything. It's still an oil, so veri caloric, but it's full of vitamins and antioxidants.

  2. I don't know where in Italy you have been my my sister family in Toscana eat past 1-2 times per day (indeed not big portions, and light versions) and they are not fat for sure 🙂

  3. Your Italian family was quite strange, believe me.

I know very few people who only drink a coffee for breakfast… and above all Italians eat pasta almost every day… at least 3 or 4 times a week.
What makes the big difference are the ingredients, always fresh and seasonal… and the big variety of food… from fish to meat, vegetable and fruits..

  4. Thank you for this video and your observations! I agree with some points but I disagree with others (based on my experience from Italy and having many Italian friends). I consider the main reason being this: every meal is an event, typically shared with others (maybe except for breakfast). There is no mindless snacking throughout the day; every meal has its time and is enjoyed in company. Italians DO like to eat pasta very often, especially for lunch, even at home. They rarely skip breakfast (although this typically means a few cookies or a piece of toast with jam). I have probably NEVER seen an Italian skip dinner, except maybe some events such as Christmas, when lunch is really excessive. They easily eat the whole pizza for dinner and then eat normally the next day. That being said, they tend to be aware of their weight and try to maintain it being active, walking a lot, choosing healthier options. This, combined with the Mediterranean diet, with lots of simple, fresh, seasonal, and unprocessed foods, lots of cooking at home, and considering food practically sacred, is what makes (many) Italians slim😊.

  5. I had a 15 day trip to Italy and Sicily a while ago .
I noticed about day 10 that my hair , skin and finger nails were growing . My skin never felt smoother , and my never felt so silky.
    BTW I'm a guy and I noticed.
Also when I got home , slowly all of the benefits went away.

  6. Campania region, southern Italy, has the worst record in Europe for fat children a teen agers.
in general in Italy poor people are fat and rich ones are very fit

  7. Naaa that is not true.. i am italian but i am fat… maybe not in terms of us standards, but surely i am fat.

  8. I'm italian, and i can say that, at least 85% of italian girls, do eat almost, only veggies and salad and food with no calories and not sweets of any type at all, cos they absolutely wanna keep'em anorexic! this is the real truth! but i do like to eat, and i don't give AF about diets, and i do eat whatever i want to! sooner or later, we're all gonna die for something, and so it's worth to absoluuuuteeelyyy enjoy, our fuuuuckiiiingggg life of shiiiitttt!!!! 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌

  9. Change the title , we are not skinny , we arent obese, if you consider normal to have the 42% of obese population as it is in usa,,in that case we the italians are skinny , but…is not normal to have almost half of the population largely overweight .
The reson is very simple the yankees eats mostly garbage processed food in huge portions , we eat healthy natural food in normal portions.
Is very simple not difficult to understand…….

  12. I was just in Rome. After just 3 days, I was asking myself the same question — how in earth are all these people staying so slim??!? Thank you for the in-depth explanation. As always, it's not magic! It's all about following healthy principles and keeping everything in balance.

  13. Hi, I am an Italian man aged 61 years old, my height is 5'11" (1.80) and my weight is 10.7 lb (61/62 kgs).

I can run and never run out of breath I am still very fit (considering my age and I am a smoker too). My line of work is in Armed Security Industry as a Cash in Transit Operator, so in this Industry is better to be lean and fit.

Anyhow, why am I still skinny and fit at my age and why I can still be healthy? The answer is at the beginning of this video: Portions of food on your plate!
In US, Australia and most of Anglo-Saxon Countries, people tend to eat until they are completely full. When I sit at the table for lunch or dinner, I stand up from the table feeling still hungry, but that's the trick if you want to keep a good weight or lose it. Then you can eat whatever you want but, instead of a whole portion of food, try to eat as I do, a quarter of portion and you will start to lose or maintain your weight. Don't make food to be the most important part of your life. As I always say to people asking me why at my age I still look good, I always answer: "…I eat to live, not live for eating!" Plus everyday I walk for about 10,000 to 15,000 steps….mind you: Not running, just walking!

Also, I don't eat and never had sweets (doughnuts, cakes, chocolate bars) or soft drinks, I truly hate them.
If I do have sweets I just eat either Dark Chocolate 80% or two teaspoons of raw honey.

I remember back in the day my father would have killed me when I was a kid, if he saw me drinking a soft drink. He was telling me all the times: "…You'd better have a glass of wine than a soft drink!"

Now lot's of people may argue that I am a smoker, yes indeed is a bad habit but also having everyday fast or take away food, sweets and soft drinks are bad habits. There are more people dying of colon, pancreatic and intestinal cancers due to wrong diets, than smokers dying by lung or other types of cancer.

Finally, me and my partner we always cook our own food (we never have take away food) and if we have pasta we have it once a fortnight, eating each of us 80 gr and we just eat that without the second dish.

Hope this helps and sorry for the long post.

    God bless you all

    Carus Alambra🙂👍

    Buon appetito a tutti!

  15. In Italy there are both skinny as well as slightly overweight to morbidly obese people. There are of course those who eat well and love walking/doing sports, but at the same time there are those who drive their motorcycles/cars everywhere. Once I saw a woman driving her car to go from one side of the street to the other just to go grocery shopping. Italian city centres are residents’ cars only, meaning that, if you don’t live there you have to walk everywhere. That’s why many people skip that area and go to supermarkets or shopping malls they can reach with their cars. I know a clothing brand that caters only to plus size women which has been in business for more than forty years and right now where I live there are three more such brands. Regular clothing companies have sadly been shrinking their sizes for quite some time, thus forcing what were once regular sized people to shop elsewhere. As for cooking from scratch, that’s what my grandmother did. Ready made meals have been a staple in Italian households for many years. It’s a very common thing to see someone have pesto jars or any other pasta sauce in their cupboard. Same goes for packed tortellini in their fridge or frozen pizza in the freezer. No one has time to cook everyday from scratch, or even if they have, they don’t like cooking. Snacking is a normal practice, same with drinking fizzy drinks like Coca Cola, Fanta or Sprite. Then there are energy drinks, juices, …

  16. you don't have to be a vegetarian
    to appreciate vegetables !
    Even an omnivore knows
    very well
that the basis of good cuisine is always vegetables !
