An important thing about tipping, in general any tips go to the business and not to the staff. So for some tourists, this means tipping may have the opposite effect from what they expect.
I'll be in Australia one year from now and this video was very helpful, especially the customs information and suggestion to wear a hat. I'll be driving while there, so that info was also helpful. Thank you!
One reason for early dinners is that many people get up early in the morning to walk or surf or exercise. Don’t miss out on seeing the early morning culture by sleeping in. You can get a coffee at 6am too.
Thank you for letting us know about what's not allowed when travelling to Australia.
As a Aussie, excellent advice
I love your very clear views and information about Australia, Australians and aspecialy Melbourne. Keep going. ❤
Finally…at long last, a really informative & useful video for visitors to this wonderful broad brown beautiful land. Its chock-a-block full of good advice without the usual breathless hysteria & bullsh*t about our nasty critters etc. Kudos & well done
I live in Darwin, and virtually everything in the water will either kill you or make you wish you were dead. Seriously.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irukandji_jellyfish
Most of the hysteria is around crocs (native to the Top End of Australia) and buffalo (an extremely dangerous pest species introduced to this country by idiots), but the most dangerous animal by far has two legs and usually speaks some variant of English. I can avoid everything except the two-legged variety, and it was a similar story in Sydney and Brisbane. Drugs and alcohol are a scourge, and we are kidding ourselves if we try to whitewash that part of Australian society.
Excellent video – thanks! But a couple of clarifications, if I may. First, the reason that Australian border security is so vigilant is that it is an island nation with many, many unique species which are endangered by the establishment foreign plant and animal pest species. Basically the advice to visitors is this: do not attempt bring any food, plants, insects, animals or any living thing into the country. Full stop. Just don’t. If you get caught, you will be given a massive fine and you may be put straight back on the next plane home at your own expense. Just don’t even try. My second point is about tipping. You said it is optional in Australia and, well, yes no-one is going to stop you tipping but it is actively discouraged. Most people don’t know that the tipping ‘culture’ in the US is a direct consequence of slavery and, as there has been no significant slavery in Australia, hospitality workers are paid a living minimum wage. My advice? Just don’t tip. Ever. It’s not being mean-spirited, it’s just the cultural norm.
SYDNEY > MELBOURNE
Thank you…Australia is not just Melbourne and Sydney
You can buy warm clothing in Australia, and if you're planning to take it out of Australia permanently (i.e. you are a tourist) you can claim a goods and services tax refund – its an efficient way to buy e.g. Quicksilver, Billabong, Rip Curl winterwear as souvenirs.
I am an Australian Everything you said was spot on Well done 😊
Does Australia celebrate Halloween? Thanks
I have never been down under. Oz is an Australian slang for "Australia".
Chinese tourists tend to make that basic error on regional roads, of driving on the wrong side of the road.
There is some great advice here that many Australians need to understand and follow. Well done!!
Australian Government needs to play this video as part of immigration. It would help SOOO much!
You do realise that there is also South Australia… You're not even from Australia and you have done the typical ignorant Eastern Stater thing of not even acknowledging the existence of the ONLY state initially colonised by FREE people!
Mistakes? Underestimating the climate. Underestimating the distances. Thanks for pointing out the issues with disturbing wildlife. Packing in and packing out in National Parks. The respect for the aboriginal culture. And the swimming dangers!!! We eat early because we're tired from the heat!!! 😀
Maybe a video about travelling Australia with respect to the seasons and where to be when.
Great video, thanks. It's also worth tourists knowing that we have a swimming culture, kids are taught to swim, as well as water safety at a very young age. That's why they are better prepared for the beaches than your average tourist. Mandatory fact: Australian humour is perverse, we named an aquatic centre after the only Prime Minister that disappeared… while going for a swim.
The main reason for being familiar with our quarantine arrangements is you don’t want to be the person who brings a deadly disease that decimates Australia’s unique wild like or destroys an agriculture industry
You do not want to be the person who brings rabies to Australia.
On the first point, a recent global traveller survey by Flight Centre of >170,000 people named Perth as the best city to visit in the world! Sydney was 15. Plus Trip Advisor recently cited Kings Park in Perth as the number one tourist attraction in Australia.
A lot of people who come to Perth will head over to Rottnest Island to see the quokkas. If you end up here one day and decide to go over there, I strongly suggest you DO NOT hire a bicycle if you are on a day trip. The island is quite big and hilly, and can be very windy at times. Use the hop on, hop off bus service which goes round the island all day and stops at 19 points every 20 minutes. You'll cover a lot more ground that way.
If you go over for a few days, a bike can be a good way to get around, altho it's still a long ride to the West End.
Tips – 10% to 15% at least unless it is bad service, don't be a tight arse. %^)
Aussie local here. This is one of the more practical vids I've seen about visiting Australia.
I agree with all points made – except one. The footy. The football match shown is known as Australian Rules. It's the most ridiculous field game I've ever seen. If you've never seen it played before, you'll find it totally confusing. Same can be said for cricket. You'd be better off watching a high level soccer or rugby match.
Excellent advice. Do watch out for the drop bears, though.
