Wow, I had no idea that when they say ‘raining volcanic ash’, that that could mean lava rock. It looks just like the lava rock we buy in bags to landscape our yards with here in USA.
When Mt. St. Helens blew , the ash was actual ash, not rock. It spread across Washington, Idaho and into Montana. I lived in north eastern Washington by the Canadian border back then and we got about three or four inches of ash. My sister was in northern Idaho and they got over a foot of ash, and my parents were in western Montana and got skiffs of ash.
