[Music] welcome along fellow fans of the Dakota architect PTO Marino once said quote appropriateness is the central point of architecture a palace should look like a palace a loft should look like a loft a hot dog stand should look like a hot dog stand and an apartment in the Dakota should look like an apartment in the Dakota not a Shak spread in the Olympic Tower end [Music] quote in September of 2019 this gorgeously Grand 11 room residence out the Dakota was put up for sale for 11 million bucks many Dakota fans were always asking me who owned or owned certain apartments and sometimes they even get asked who designed them well check this out this apartment was once owned by education and media bigwig Chris Whittle he’s the genius who conceived Edison schools he also founded Avenues the world school now one of New York City’s 10 largest private schools he hired American architect Peter Marino to transform his Dakota apartment into an extraordinary space Marino is renowned for his exceptional architectural and design projects as well as his distinctive personal fashion style often described as a quote tattooed biker look end quote this unique fashion sense includes predominantly black clothing leather adorned with buckles and studs and a leather cap kind of like how I dress just kidding which Marina refers to as a decoy the apartment sprs out across 4500 ft and features 12T ceilings restored original details and some contemporary flourishes including ash black wood floors and hand painted walls the photos I’m going to show you are from a house and garden article from August of 1987 and from a September 2019 real estate listing let’s go when Chris whle purchased the apartment in the Dakota it was a dilapidated seriously dilapidated that’s how it was described six room space By the time Marino finished his work not a single inch of the original apartment ceilings walls moldings floors remained Untouched by him he tackled everything you see Marino aimed to design and decorate the apartment as if and this is really cool Chris Whittle was its first resident in 1884 cool right this required not only renovation but complete reconstruction demanding extensive research resources and a heck of a lot of imagination the project was comprehensive we’re talking about A2Z everything was specially curated for the apartment down to the Georgian silverware Marino amassed an impressive collection of 19th century European paintings drawings watercolors and early 20th century American paintings he even acquired a major Pottery collection Georgian cut crystal American bronze decorative objects and 19th century English feldspar and Jasper items he also assembled a collection of antique Russian French Empire and 17th century English twirled wood can C sticks you see Marina wanted candle light everywhere he also wanted fires in all the fireplaces and gold gilding shimmering on the furniture following 19th century tradition the major rooms were painted in strong colors Ox blood for the dining room gold for the living room and terracotta for the study these were done using ultramarine 19th century pigment paints mixed with milk the apartment’s Halls were neutral so the central core a long windowless space called The Gallery was painted pale gray and decorated with stencils dominating the gallery was a fulllength portrait by American impressionist Richard Miller depicting a woman in a white Shaw looking into a mirror above a commode Marino found a large oval Regency mirror similar to the one in the painting and hung it perpendicular to it suggesting it had been the artist model for the curved steel frames of the upholstered bench in the gallery Marino used a company that’s been making buggy springs for over a century the apartment enters into a 21 ft Grand entry Gallery complete with its own wood burning fireplace this leads to the entertaining center of the home the stencils in the front hall were adapted by Peter Marino and they were inspired by Edwardian art Nuvo curtains framing the doorway to the living room there was a Charles the 10th clock that sat at top the Frank furnace fireplace beneath in a "A Sheik's friend in the Olympic tower". Interesting that you point this out. Trump's triplex in Trump Tower, interiors by Angel Donghia featured in Architural Digest. It was nice, dark chocolate, bronze and looked like an airport lounge from 1983. At some point Trump visited a "Middle Easterner" who lived in the Olympic Tower and this in turn resulted in a massive remodeling of the apartment into a mix of Saudi Arabia chic coupled with bad Las Vegas casino mob boss , an orgy of garish gold rococo on every surface. This style naturally appeals to corrupt Saudi and other middle eastern dictators, Russian oligarchs and Trump. People who don't have money think that this is what wealth looks like. Back to the Dakota.
One of My favorite architectural subjects 🙏
Wow! ❤
Love authentic restoration and not boring, open space 'modernized' crap. Each distinct room a delightful banquet. Thank you for the video.
Love these Dakota vids!
So cool that the whole place is like a time machine.
Wait, you can have wool curtains? They make wool curtains?
This entire residence, exactly as photographed, needs to be preserved as a National Historic Landmark. Genius of the absolute highest kind! Thanks so much for this!
Simply amazing, the stenciling is the icing on the cake…thanks…!
I've been inside the Dakota visiting a friend. It's a horrible SIN to modernize the interiors of any apartment in that building. The craftsmanship that went into that building both inside and outside is beyond amazing!
Oh! Just too beautiful. Please, let me win the lottery!
This is where John Lennon and Yoko Ono lived before his death .
I'd live in a f ing broom closet in the dakota!! Never disappoints! Thank you 💜🌈💜
Absolutely L O V E IT!! Yes, I would live there, 100%, yes!
I like it, but not the window ACs as viewed from the exterior.
I'd love to live there..but I would hate to clean it.
Rosemary's baby boy wants to come back home!
Would I live in the 1884 Masterpiece ? You bet I would !! I love every single rooms in all of this beautiful building . The rooms and the other parts of each and every one are so cool, I would most likely love all . I would love it however it is , older looks are for me for sure . It’s such a beautiful building, need to win the lottery for sure . Great video Scott , I could watch it every day !!
Thanks!
Exquisite restoration…Thank you for the delightful tour!❤
If I were rolling in dough, I most assuredly would NOT decorate this Dakota apartment like what I just saw. The fifties modern stuff doesn't belong in here! I like some of what they've done with it, but there is a great deal that does nothing to enhance the 1880's grandeur of the rooms. Oh, how I wish we could see some beautifully restored slides of what this apartment looked like in the 1880's!! The only person I would hire to design and decorate the interior of this apartment, if it were mine, is John Saladino.
It’s soooo gaudy.

Thanks so much for posting this! I’ve admired the Whittle apartment since I first saw it in AD back in the 1980’s. I may be wrong on this, but I recall Mr. Whittle owning 2 apartments in the Dakota, both done by Peter Marino. The first apartment (the ‘golden’ one) was before he was married. The second and much larger one was for his new family. It too was featured in a decorating magazine – either AD or House & Garden a few years after the first one. The decor was similar but different as I recall. I’ve searched the internet for pics of the ‘golden’ decor apartment, but have had little success other than a couple of images, both of which are in your great video. I may be misremembering, but I do recall seeing 2 apartments. Thanks for doing this. LOVE the floor plans.
I absolutely love these videos. Photos are a return ticket to a time long since gone. So interesting thank you
Absolutely !! My favorite residence in NYC !!
I met someone at the Mineshaft in the late ‘70s who looked just like Mr. Marino. I can’t be certain it was him because my back was turned.
Thanks!
Scott, watching “The Gilded Age” , Central Park 1882 and thought of you!
My grandparents considered buying an apartment at the Dakota in the 1950s when he was representing the Air Force at the United Nations. unfortunately, they did not do so. They retired to Gloucester County, Virginia after his last posting in New York.
