In its heyday, the Biella wine region was not only Piedmont’s most important region, with 110,000 acres under vine, it was one of Italy’s most revered regions. But this changed in 1905 when a tragic hail storm decimated the entire vintage. At the same time the cashmere industry in the region was booming, thanks to the near perfect water conditions. This meant farmers abandoned their crops and turned their attention to more profitable pursuits.

It’s only been in the past 10-20 years that the region has found its feet again. The cooler climate and lower alcohol levels, along with the sandy soils influenced by ancient marine life, has resulted in Nebbiolo wines with great finesse.
