Mio DIO. The negotiations begin, we guess…
This week, we took down the ceiling in the library room to prepare for building a loft space. Hopefully, this will be our last demolition video for a while 🤞🏼. As for the quote given by the Geometra, we will try to avoid building the road for now, but we know we’ll have to get around to it eventually – especially if we want to get married here. But that’s a problem for another day… a day when we have €80,000 lying around. Right now, our focus is getting the house to a liveable state. Without having to install a new roof, we will be able to install plumbing, electrics, floors, plaster, and everything else much sooner than we thought!
Late spring has brought so much life to our little hill in Tuscany. It is so rich and green at this time of year.
Thanks as always for watching. 💚
yeah what powerful powerful fly helicopter I’ve never seen this before this whole room into a LOF Library we’re opening up half the ceiling this we’re moving into the living room it’s a really beautiful old piece of stone probably replacing it with a maybe a small burner just cuz we limited with room and we’re adding shelves and stuff and adding books after our geometri meeting we had a discussion about how the meeting went but all of that is in slow motion because someone who shall not be named changed the settings of the camera to slow motion and so a lot of the fure we have is super slow so now we’re damn it voice over in the meeting that’s the plan right [Music] now so annoying I’m cutting this out I’m editing I know you’re going to cut it out don’t why so we had the meeting with the geoma which is the civil engineer slash building manager SL contractor he’s a good guy great great guy really nice really transparent really honest pretty young which is great um and he quoted us €25,000 Jesus for the whole renovation which includes quite a lot it’s a brand new roof all the anti-seismic modifications that are needed plaster over the walls new floors new walls doors windows heating yeah this was all very expensive plus $80,000 for a road yeah apparently if we want to get trucks going up the road we need a really Solid 3 m wide Road 15 cm of concrete depth blah blah blah yeah so this is going to end up at like 3 to 350,000 year project if we would just go as is with all the recommendations I mean he works with a bunch of foreigners who B you come in on a retirement age and then just like have a chunk of change just deploy in Italy um and so I think he’s used to like a real plug andplay option where they where Americans will come in or foreigners will come in and they’ll just like get a brand new house for yeah doing nothing by themselves yeah just do absolutely nothing which for sure I mean it works but that’s just not who we are so we decid to change approach we’re going to have him Quote us the absolute bar minimum um we agreed that we do not need a new roof the structure is solid strong so only fixing and the insulation apparently that alone brings down both the cost but also changes the requirements for the road it’s far less materials so you can just use tractors which solves the road issu now we don’t even pay $80,000 fix the road yeah not doing the new roof also means though that we cannot break some walls that we intended to break cuz there’re supporting walls for that existing roof I’m annoyed because basically in the main room where we want to break down the wall between the two between the living room and the kitchen there are these beautiful archways all along the sides of the house and they’re so old they’re from like the 1500s and I’m like €50,000 and you get to expose them I don’t have €50,000 however I was saying that I feel like it’s worth the price 50,000 for for to expose that like Beauty instead what we’re doing is we’re just like putting up these steel beams and then they’ll stick out like 25 cm from each side it’ll still be one open space but you won’t get archways across the whole thing so yeah we’ve been arguing but I’m definitely in the wrong because €50,000 is a lot of money yeah so what we’re asking him now is for that requote and we’re aiming to basically cut it down by 80% just basically doing the bare bare minimum and then we’re going to do everything else what is it there’s we asked them to do to fix the roof add earthquake chains break down that wall add a new septic tank move the fireplace and that’s it right that’s all we’re asking you to do mhm easy no more [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] the clouds look beautiful today they do I can really see them up close yeah bring all the wood from there burn it all work from anywhere Revolution there so much bread for love that cheese actually yeah I love simple cheese like this now that we’re not redoing the roof against my wishes well this ad article really me up I was like $500,000 for my new kitchen we could spend like 50,000 on like um arches but no it wasn’t it wasn’t ad it was washy Journal that’s crazy I bet they flooded the place themselves huh insurance money kick them who take the opportunity to spend 500,000 on a kitchen for a flood two investors they made a lot of money they see it as the investment H they have equity in the kitchen no they probably just kitchen will exit huh I’m like choking on salami J was point out I mean everything is super bespoke right so when you buy to order something that’s expensive it’s already expensive and then you’re like it I want to bespoke to my personal fittings it’s like at that point if it’s bespoke you can try anything you want some Rich enough we’ll pay for it I ate these two investors who to 500 half a million no bread knife can cut this bread what is like a challenge for King Arthur no mortal man no it’s like but it’s pretty good inside so I’m happy I’m loving this meal actually yeah it’s getting better and better so I much have like 100 anes on my own it’s kind of disgusting it’s the Japanese in look it’s just pure Mommy and salt I really like how westerners say like Umami bomb I’m like what first of all it’s triggering because of the Whole World War II thing I mean but then for all other things it’s an explosion you know like an explosion of flavors in your mouth yeah well specifically for a Mommy it’s a bomb okay so we just finished de Plastering this whole house so first things one thing we know is that we’re getting rid of that wall right so getting rid of that wall One open space you’ll a to see all the Arches going across and the kitchen dining and living room space will be want we’re going to open up into a door which will then lead to our vegetable patch so we love cooking right so having the kchen here means you can really see the whole house so dining the vegetable the living room we opened that new door so you can see all the way into the office Library space and the doorway so best position you really see everything from here yeah are we going to use the chimney Shack we can make a pizza oven I don’t think we’re going to have that much pizza bread oven I guess so yeah cuz bread is not great here Bread’s not great in Italy you’re saying it maybe it can be here outside actually M that’s a great place for it cuz when we come down that’s a great place for it yeah cool nice it’s so pretty this fir Place see yeah basically we made the exective decision to use this fireplace transport it into this space and place it here at the heart of the house this door will be used for firewood we’ll get a nice Italian sofa get a nice rug make it super cozy we don’t know what we’re going to do there yet sorry where I’m not sure I don’t know what to do with this well I’m 2 m so it’s a little deck basically Napoleon door it’s a completely Concrete Construction it’s pretty poorly made uh probably sometime in like the early 2000s late 2000s yeah seems pretty new it seems pretty new it’s completely cement so we’re planning to destroy it when soon I guess when we have have a different toilet that bit you’re standing on looks old it looks it’s kind of new and bad yeah but the one before actually is really Charming yeah we can’t take this away oh yeah for sure no we so we’ll just keep that bed yeah so we just destroy the stairs basically yeah and the toilet should I get into bucketeering no why not so many reasons why not look look sometimes it’s really good

I have been doing histoic restoration my entire life.. I always ask my ckients to prepare a written plan and what they think their timeline will be/ The plan should state what happens first. Putting together a buget come next. Tearing stuff down and doing demo work should only happen when you know how you're going to put it back and it's cost. You're going to have setbacks to your project.
but planning goes a long way to a good project. Have fun and keep smiling.
How much have you paid for the property???
Use the debris from the walls on the road. You have to dump it somewhere so build the road up with it.😊
I recently found you channel and I've been loving the videos. I can't wait to follow you on your journey of turning this house into your home.
Just be careful about being so fixated on moving the fireplace that you end up spending a lot of money there and leaving yourselves in a difficult position further down the road. I would be tempted to leave it in situ (it looks great in the library!) and if your budget stretches in the future commission something or source at a reclamation yard. The expensive part in any case will be the chimney and making right the roof and so on as opposed to the surround. The house is a real gem. You didn't mention electrical, is that included in the minimum quote from the geometra? Good luck!
About kitchen…why you don't bilt by yourself? A nice contry kitchen covered with italian majolica
There are a lot of second hand kitchens…
Please speak towards the microphones, and not when you're eating!
I think think twice before tearing down things.
Also think about historical and uniqueness of your house.
Your channel have big potential but casually using the f word will put people off from subscribing.
Time is money. having it done professionally and up to code especially in Italy is worth your dollars or euros. Italian craftsmanship is second to none. Plus you won't have to deal with all the BS that comes into play. It will also be beneficial to your relationship.
I has to put the up the subtitles to understand what you were saying
I 🎤 would be a great idea
Always sound quality over picture quality on utube
I appreciate your video. My son has purchased a home outside of Asti. We had the same problem with the geometra and a similar price. Six months after purchasing the old farm house we decided to completely change our approach to the project at hand. Right now I am renovating the bathroom (permanent work) and the kitchen (temporary). This way we can stay in the building while we complete the big task of structural work, adding two bathrooms and eventually the new roof. I am a general contractor in California so my biggest problems here is communicating with the local contractors. The change we made was a trade, we will be completing the same work we decided to do in the beginning design. But we will do it piece by piece, and probably with a different geometra. In other You Tube videos I have seen others that have had the same problems with price gouging. Good for you that you are willing to get your hands dirty. I hope you are able to create a beautiful home, it looks like a lovely location.
In Italy a full renovation with normal standards costs around 1000Euro / m2. It can be tricky! But I am sure you'll get where you want. 😊
O what a task you’ve chewed your way into….!
It’s lovely and a wonderful place to live out your lives together.
Lots of people will offer you building and renovation advice. Feel your way along through it all, pick out the good stuff, and spit out the rest.
I will tell you something you may not be prepared for.
You will both become different people.
All that is different now in your world, can’t help but shape you. And you MUST be comfortable with this – or it will break you.
My husband and I sold everything we owned and moved from NYC to rural northwestern ireland – 9 years ago. We bought a derelict stone schoolhouse house online without ever seeing it – got off the plane, and camped out in a building site until it was complete.
I was 60. Husband was 64. I arrived with a wardrobe of “business casual” – cashmere jackets and pencil skirts.
Now?
Leggings for scrambling over wire fences, and big rubber wellies to wade across the bog – the landscape shapes us, and the life must change beyond recognition.
Enjoy the great exciting days, and be patient with each other when you are broken under the seemingly unending work.
Life is an adventure, meant to be lived.
You are starting out on something WONDERFUL.
Love ALL your moments.
Your channel seems mildly interesting but it is competeing with others that are very similar. The best channels convey a clarity and respect for the audience. Your excuse that you "were so hungry" while chewing, choking and making clattering noises and moving around so much that the mic could barely pick up your words is not respectful of yourselves, your project or us. Not subscribing now but will check back next month to see how you are doing. Good luck, really, not trying to be mean.
